I just wanted to let everyone know of my great experience with Allstate. My ring was insured with them under our homeowners policy. I recently chipped/cracked my stone and made a claim. They sent their jeweler to my house to examine and verify the damege. He also brought several stones with him to see if wanted to purchase.......I brought out my laptop and punched in the numbers to HCA and none were excellent. I never intended to get a stone thru him anyway.....long story short Allstate asked me right off the bat if I wanted to use my own jeweler. They would just need to get the replacement value from their jeweler. The value is $6200. I think we paid a little less than this so I am very happy with the outcome. Allstate will issue a check next week. The best part is this.......their jeweler (NY Jewelers here in Chicago) offered to buy the damaged stone from Allstste for $300!! I was shocked because even though it is damaged (you can't see the damage with your naked eye, can only feel it with my fingernail) he said it could be cut to at least 1/2 carat. So Allstate said I could keep the stone minus the $300. I said Yes! I may set it in a bezel pendant since you can't see the damage. My stone is a 1.02 RB GIA EX vg/vg H-SI-1. The stone was purchased last Feb (07) from Blue Nile. This was before I discovered pricescope so I will take the cash and get something a little bigger and better. Thanks for all the education everyone!! |

Also wanted to add that even though Allstate was great.....our homeowners insurance will go up about 15%. Which isn't that much really but something to think about if deciding between a stand alone policy or adding it on to existing homeowners.....

I am sorry that you chipped your stone, but that is awesome that you had such a great outcome! Make sure to come back with pictures of what you decide on!

Wow, that puts my mind at ease!!! I have Allstate also - we have a rider on our homeowners policy. I few months ago I had a DREAM that I shattered my diamond but then I was all worried about it maybe happening so I checked up on our policy. When I called my local agent, he said that they would try to replace it first (their jeweler is Mervis, where I bought my stone!) but if I didn't like any of the replacements offered they would cut me a check. I was worried about them maybe "pushing" a specific stone on me that I didn't want, though, in case something happened, so I'm really glad to hear that they will cut a check if I wanted that option. Sorry that your stone chipped, but I'm really glad that everything worked out for you!

I decided to go with Jewelers mutual because I didn't want my homeowners to go up if I filed a claim. It was the exact same price.
