Fair Scores vs Excellent Scores on HCA |

Hi everyone, I just had a quick question regarding RBs that score "Fair" on the HCA; would the performance difference between a stone with this score and a stone with an "Excellent" score be noticeable in a B&M jewlery store? If so, how noticeable? If not, what would be the best conditions in which to view the difference? Thanks in advance!

Take the diamond outside into natural light, the difference should be more apparent. If you go outside NEVER EVER look at diamonds in direct sunlight (the better the cut the worse they look). Use shaded daylight. Try to find something you know is good to compare too. Mine scored "fair" on the HCA. It is now being recut. You won't be able to see the difference under those lights, but you find the difference eventually and it may drive you crazy! I wish I'd known about the HCA before my purchase!

It comes down mostly to lighting and experience. In some lighting, like Garry has told you, a scruffy dog looks like a pedigree one. However, as one examines diamonds , especially close up and in comparision, side by side, one can begin to discern the nuances of difference which make a great diamond differ and those others that on first looking have a quite pleasing appearance although they just are not at the top end of the game. It takes patience and letting your eyes get accustomed to viewing the sparkles and brightness. Look and study for a couple minutes, and don't rush. It isn't difficult, but you have to examine carefully what your eyes are telling you.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but why does a better cut stone look worse in direct sunlight?

http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=18903 and many other threads where people bought nice diamonds and were disapointed in direct light. This DiamCalc shows a well cut stone and the very strong small light source. I will show a worse cut stone next  Garry Holloway FGAA DipDT |
