So I thought you might like to see this. I really did think of you when I first saw it!This belonged to either my grandmother or her sister, not sure which and I'm too lazy to ask mom right now. Originally my mom was leaving a bunch of jewelry to my sister, but her thoughts have changed on that. So I went and got the stuff out of the bank box to take inventory, and help her decide what to leave and what not to. There's also a really pretty Amethyst pin, and some earrings and a bracelet, though the latter two are less expensive pieces. I'll post pics of those later, my bats are charging. Aside from the sheer volume of this ring (I have no idea on size, let's just say huge, lol), it's absolutely gorgeous, at least I think so. And the prongs are awesome, I don't recall ever seeing this type on a ring before, has anyone else? They remind me of something Leon would/could do.So, without further ado, the ring. ![]() ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "It is also important for the State to inculcate in its subjects an aversion to any 'conspiracy theory of history' for a search for 'conspiracies' means a search for motives and an attribution of responsibility for historical misdeeds." -Murray N. Rothbard, in The Anatomy of the State John Swinton [1829-1901] Chief Editorial Writer of the New York Times (Considered "the Dean of his Profession" by his peers), when asked to toast an 'Independent Press' in a gathering at the National Press Club, circa 1880 "There is no such thing in America as an independent press unless it is in the country towns. I am paid... for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for doing similar things.... The business of the New York journalist is to distort the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and sell his country and race for his daily bread, or for what is about the same thing, his salary. You know this, and I know it and what foolery to be toasting an 'independent press.' We are tools, and the vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are jumping-jacks. They pull the strings and we dance. Our time, our talents, our lives, our possibilities, all are the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes." |

Date: 8/30/2008 2:29:28 PM Well, that's what I'm battling with. I could have it, if I want. The thing is, we all know I'm not a size gal, though frankly, I'm not sure who would be a big enough size gal to wear this thing. Author: Linda W Ellen, That is one big whopper of a ring. It is a gorgeous color and I love it. Do you get to keep it I hope??? Linda And this is not something I would consider taking apart and recutting. It all goes too well together, I just can't do it. So, my sister has an Amethyst heart necklace that came from my gramma, she would probably like to have the Amethyst pieces. The only problem is, we worry she might be forced to sell some things down the road, so I'm really torn on what to do. Let her have the whole set (which is somewhat risky), or keep it and put it in the bank box. What would you do? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

That is a hard decision. Knowing she may have to sell the pieces, I would keep it That way, you could pass it down to one of your sons. I am all for keeping family treasures in the family. I would hate to have any of my grandma's rings that I have be sold. I would be heartbroken.

I LOVE it! I'm currently half-heartedly searching for an amethyst of that size to make a cocktail ring! (I dread thinking of how much the setting will cost though - I don't think you can get stock rings that take a gemstone that size, huh?)

The larger stones were worn to dinner parties as statement pieces at this period of excess (the guilded age)...one thing to consider is that the ring could possibly be from the 1940s because there was a trend during this time to wear turn of the century designs set with purple stones or zircons that were showy and large with engraving and enamel...But my money is on the early 1900s for this particular piece...its a real beauty...(remember that enamel is easy to damage)

No, you're right, something this size will definitely take a custom setting. Good luck in your search! jewelerman, thank you, and thanks for the info. I have a feeling, that your feeling is right on the time period. I'll try and ask my mom today whose it was and about how old it is. I wonder if you would be so kind as to give me an opinion on another piece (necklace) she has. I will post it later today in the jewelry section, but it's what made mom rethink everything to begin with. She seems to think it may be rather valuable. Thanks again all! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
