Wow...she would certainly be an interesting choice...although I don't know if I believe it with all the games presidential candidates play in the picking of their VPs.  About an hour from now we will know & be in a position to compare McCain's pick to Biden.

ETA: I just read that most of the news sources have named her the VP...WOW is all I have to say...if this is true, this race just got a little more interesting.

Do you think he would have chose her were it not for the Hillary stuff?  Because I just do not see McCain naturally picking a woman.

I'm sure that had something to do with it...but not all.  Presidential candidates must listen to their critics and advisors alike and pick a VP who will garner them the most votes, that's just how it is.  A weakness in one area can often be fortified with a VP knowledgable in that area.  I do find it funny that Sarah is a woman who is very much pro-life while Biden is a pro-choice Catholic.  I feel like everyone, me included, will be doing a lot of research on her because she was such a "dark horse" VP pick.

OK, so she is a former Miss Alaska contestant, isn't she going to make him look like Methuselah when they stand together on the stage? link

Palin is the first woman governor of Alaska, elected in 2006. The youngest ever elected at the age of 42. Mother of five children, (the youngest of whom was born in April) and has Down Syndrome. She ran on a clean government platform in '06 to defeat the incumbent Republican Governor Frank Murkowski. Her approval rating in AK is at 80% and her oldest son is in the Army. Her husband works for BP and they eloped. She is very socially conservative.

I'm just glad that my former Governor Mitt Romney is not the VP candidate. He was totaly ineffective when working with a state house that dissented with him, how could he have gotten anything done as prez when he had no power in MA as its Governor?

I think she is great.  Been a great governor and has the most executive experience out of anyone running so far.  5 kids, one has Downs.  One kid is in Iraq fighting.  She will have a tough time debating Biden on foreign policy but she is a tough, smart woman.

Yeah I understand that, but I think he really must be counting on those pissed off Hillary supporters.  That's quite a bet to make.  I hope I like her.  And everyone can be pissy at me here but I'm going to say it:  That way, when McCain dies in office (assuming he's elected), we can have a great female President.  I'm on vacation starting tomorrow without internet!!   I wish I could spend the week researching her.

Man, that was a smart move on his part & things are really going to get interesting.   Problem for me is that I don't think Mccain ever would have picked a woman had Obama chosen Hillary as his VP or maybe he would have, that would have really made the election something else, a guaranteed woman VP.

Ahhh!  No Internet?!  Where are you headed?

I don't know if many Hillary supporters will actually jump on McCain's wagon simply because they will probably fall in line with their party lines and Obama certainly has more common views with Hillary than with McCain, but it should be interesting to hear some viewpoints from PSers who supported Hillary...

Romney would've just added to the image of the McCain ticket of extreme wealth & I was really hoping against Ridge.  Pawlenty might have been a solid choice, but I am not initially unhappy with Palin as the VP nominee.

Never heard of her, and it is an interesting choice.

I know NOTHING about her, she is young, how much experience does she have? I am happy he picked a woman though...another historical aspect to this campaign!

Yeah, McCain's ticket is now the flip-flop of Obama's in relation to age/experience.  To add to swimmer's facts, she is against government "pork barrel" spending and a whistleblower within her own party and has spoken/voted against several members of the Republican party.

Touche, John McCain! This fight is gonna be a hum-dinger. Apparently she's the "Hottest G'vnr of all 50 States"(as if there was a lot of female competition).

I'm just going to the beach.  I'm sure we could find the internet but I'm going to actually use it as a real vacation.  Besides, I'll have enough stress/entertainment in the condo.  We go with FI's parents and his dad is a conservative Republican.  I'm talking a Hannity, O'Reilly, and Rush fan.  I can already feel my blood pressure rising, lol.  It's really going to be nuts because FI and I want to watch the RNC, but doing it with his dad?  eek!  Yeah, we always have fun at the dinner table.  Good thing we all love each other.

Most Hillary supporters will likely fall in line, but it will help McCain to get those that don't.  This really was a smart move on his part.  Obama has his historic campaign and now McCain has his.  This is going to be so much fun!  I've already planned to take the day after elections off from work! lol

That sounds like fun...I actually like those "real" vacations where you are totally detached from your normal, everyday life.  Sounds like the condo will be the site of several debates and you'll have your own mini-GOP Convention there lol

Yeah, I think Palin makes the already historic race that much more interesting.  Whether I vote for McCain or Obama, I feel proud as a woman that one of "us" could be VP!

Isn't she ultra conservative and pro life...not sure how that would go for a lot of women voters...

My colleagues and I were discussing this week.  We knew she was going to pick a woman.  If he could have picked an African American woman, he probably would have.

Strategery...

Yeah, picking a VP is all about strategy and making up for your perceived (or true) weaknesses.  She is ultra conservative but I think some voters will prefer her defined stance on issues as opposed to someone who will "flip-flop".  She seems to have some great ideas on how to solve the "energy crisis," especially since she is from Alaska, a state very much at the heart of that debate.  I like that she is detached from Washington, but I do see the lack of experience as a flaw...but the argument there is better in a VP than a President I guess.

Condi was never an option, as McCain can't afford to be associated so closely with anyone in the Bush administration.  It would've made for open season by the Dems.

She's a new governor from one of our nation's least populous states, with no foreign policy experience to speak of.  She may have great conservative ideas and may have a heck of a personality, but honestly - if she weren't a woman, do you think she would have been the Republican pick to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency?  Having briefly reviewed her political stance, it appears she's more conservative than McCain on some issues.  I think this choice moves the party line farther to the right as we head towards November.

He picked her to get elected, not because she's the best person for the job.  However, she does come across as pretty good.

But wow...mayor of an Alaskan town to potential a heartbeat away from the presidency...how's that for the American dream?

I think another big push for her is due to all her work with the natural gas pipeline.  As natural resources are significant issue for this election, as well.

Clearly Palin's gender had something to do with her nomination, but I find it to be a disservice to her and to women in general to state that that is the *only* reason.  I also think it's ignorant to assume that women will vote for McCain just because he has a female VP - no one has expressed this here, but several articles have already alluded to it.

McCain chose Palin for the same reasons Obama chose Biden and the same reason ANY presidential candidate chooses their running mate...it evens out their weaknesses (McCain's age vs. Obama's foreign policy) and helps them garner votes.

This should be very exciting.

He picked her to get elected, not because she's the best person for the job.

This. I was astonished at the naked pandering this choice represents. He needed someone young to appeal to the young crowd, and a woman to pick up the Hillary vote. Would he choose a woman as his running mate otherwise? I doubt it.

It's the perfect choice to eclipse Obama's speech last night and to counter Obama's points against McCain being a relic from the past. The very first news article I read about her brought up the skeleton about her using political clout to attack her ex-brother-in-law's job, and I was surprised McCain picked up someone with a potentially sticky closet.

From MSNBC:

But, he cautioned, “The huge gamble is that John McCain is 72, he’s had a couple of bouts with cancer.” If McCain wins the election, but then were to die or become disabled, Buchanan wondered, “Can this woman be President of the United States?”

Come on...haven't we proved if Dubya can be president, ANYONE can?
