brightstone Cut Rock Total Posts: 271 Last Post: 11/5/2009 Member Since: 8/18/2008	Hi, My boyfriend and I have been ring hunting and found a setting we both love (I'll try to attach a pic of the setting). When I tried the ring on in the store, it had a 1.50 carat diamond in it ($11,000 for the stone) and it looked SO good. We agreed that $11,000 was more than we wanted to spend(the diamond was a GIA cert: cut: very good, color: F, clarity: SI1 (no flaw visible to the naked eye), polish and symmetry: very good). We talked about it and agreed that we both feel good about a diamond somewhere in the range of $6,000-7,000 (because the setting alone already is $2,000). I also thought that going down in size to a range of 1.30-1.50 would help us find something, but it still seems tough to find something with: ideal cut to very good cut, f-h color (should I go to I or J or will it look yellow with that platinum band?), VS2 or SI1 or better (no flaws visible to the naked eye) within our price range. Are we unrealistic to think we could find something stunning in this size for that amount of $? Should we go down in size?...and if we do, how will it look with the setting (ie. will the setting overpower a smaller diamond?). treasure hunting...

I love the ring you have chosen - and it's a great idea to look for a better (and less expensive!) diamond online. :) Many PSers have I or J colour stones set in platinum, and they look perfectly white. As long as you get the best possible cut, an I or J diamond will be beautiful. I've found a couple of stunning stones for you to look at: 1.53ct J SI2 $7160 before PS discount 1.30ct I SI1 $6876 before PS discount Either of these stones would look just amazing in your setting. x x x

I'm not sure if it'll cost less, but it may. Also, you can save costs if you get 18K WG, but if your dead set on platinum than go for it! If you get a hearts and arrows stone, a J and def. an I color stone should face up white! do a search and you can see for yourself! Congrats~ Stephanie

For some reason my computer at home won't let me enlarge the pictures of them or enlarge the GIA reports. I'll have to try from my work computer at home. Is there any way to tell, when looking at a diamond on-line, whether it's flaws are viewable to the naked eye? Thanks again!!

You're very welcome. :) Regarding being eyeclean, just phone Whiteflash (they are an awesome company and very helpful) and tell them what YOU mean by eyeclean (distance, angles etc). They will look at the stones for you and tell you honestly if they think they would be suitable & eyeclean enough for you. I'm guessing you might have a pop-up blocker on your computer that's stopping the reports & photos opening for you. Have attached the 1.53 J SI2 pic... x x x

If you want to stay in your color/clarity range it should easily afford a 1.1-1.25 carat stone. I really think that anything over a carat would look perfect in the lovely setting you chose. I just love the profile design on that setting!!

:) Ideal Rock Total Posts: 1,864 Last Post: 6/1/2009 Member Since: 7/25/2006	Before purchasing a J colored stone you need to go and see your personal color tolerances/preferences are in person. Go and look at GIA or AGS graded stones and see what colors you prefer.
