Just wondering what reception lighting costs if you keep it simple. I see elaborate things on tv all the time, but what about just a basic amber glow from the chandeliers and maybe a few dark amber lights to create a warm atmosphere? Then candlelight on tables. Has anyone used a lighting designer? Is it possible to do just a few things a la carte without getting a whole expensive package? Can you DIY with changing the chandelier bulbs?

I have no idea about the specifics, but 2 friends of mine are having lighting done for their receptions. They both have uplighting and custom gobos (monograms shining down on the dance floor). One paid $3,000, and the other will be paying $800. This is all in the Bay Area.

We had uplighting, it cost us $2000. I had also wanted pinspotting on the centerpieces, but couldn't fit it into the budget. It was an additional $2500. Prices will vary based on how much lighting you want, the quality of the equipment and of course how hidden you would like it. If you want them to come and set up the lighting so you can't see any equipment it costs more than if they're just going to put an uplight on the floor and let it illuminate a wall. For us they built the lighting into the tent so that you couldn't see it until it was lit. We also had mutilple colors throughout the night and some specially blended colors. I have to say it was worth every penny as the pictures came out amazing. ETA: check out my photographer's blog www.kristinspencer.com/blog a lot of her brides have used lighting.
