Hi there! I've been lurking for a while, and I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts so much that I thought I'd step up and introduce myself and tell my story!  BF and I have been together for 6 1/2 years. We started dating in undergrad, when he was a senior and I was a junior. After 1 month of dating, he graduated and we entered into a 4 1/2 year long distance relationship while I finished college and graduate school. Two years ago we moved in together and things couldn't be better. So now that we're cohabiting and settled into our lives, my mind is naturally turning towards thoughts of marriage. Of course, it's hard not to think about marriage when everyone around you is getting married/engaged!  I've known for a while that this was the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We've talked about marriage a number of times (sometimes seriously, sometimes offhandedly/jokingly) and what our long term goals and plans are as far as buying a house, career choices, and children. We've even talked about rings, though nothing specific, just general trends. He has excellent taste, and I'm quite happy to let him pick and be completely surprised! Right now it seems to be a timing issue. BF is very careful about stealing other people's thunder, and the last thing he'd do is take away from someone else's big moment. For example, his brother proposed to his fiancee last September, and they are planning a September '09 wedding. BF wants to time the engagement so that we're married within 1 year of the proposal, but we can't have our wedding too close to his brother's because they have a lot of out-of-state relatives who would have a lot of traveling to do. So I think it will be a while still. Probably at least another 6 months if not longer. But I'm quite happy to enjoy the giddy expectation that precedes the actual proposal (just like Christmas eve as a child!). It also helps knowing that there is a wonderful supportive forum here! I know that I am in excellent company! Hope everyone's pre-proposal period is exciting and filled with love and joy!

Yay, welcome! Sounds like you're in such a great place in your relationship, it must be great to be together after doing long-distance for so long! We're glad you are here  Go ahead and add yourself to the "official" list, if you haven't already! What kind of ring/stone do you prefer? I'm curious

Hi Happycat!! First off, I love your Icanhascheezburger avatar! Second, welcome! Good to see you have such a good attitude about waiting, not all of us are so patient!  Hope your stay is short and sweet! Any ideas on your ring? I know he's picking, but what styles do you like? ~ Let all the people of the world say what they please I alone know what I do ~ |

Hi! Thank you all for the warm welcome. :-) As far as ring styles go...I'm one of those people who loves all styles and can find something beautiful about every kind of ring. So it's probably a good thing that he's choosing, otherwise I'd never make a decision! I do really enjoy the look of vintage/antique style rings though, and we had discussed possibly doing a sapphire (my birthstone) for a center stone instead of a diamond. But we'll see! At this point I'd probably be happy with a piece of string...although I am partial to sparkly things. Elledizzy: I'm so completely addicted to Icanhascheezburger...it just makes me burst out laughing. :-) Again, thanks to everyone for the welcome!

Thank you all for the warm welcome! SparklyLibra: Nice to meet you too! I not sure when it will happen, but probably sometime between 6 months and a year from now. But BF is pretty spontaneous sometimes. It just as likely that it will be tomorrow as it is next year! But the anticipation is definitely fun! Katamari: I've never been to stuffonmycat!
