I know some knotties and PS'ers are carrying lanterns instead of flowers but I was wondering what you ladies thought I should do.  My BM flowers are 40.00 a pop and I'm hoping to cut costs and do something unique w/o looking silly or cheap.

I found these lanterns for 12.00 a piece and I figure I can use them at the recpetion if I wanted to to "tie" them in.  I found 5 little ones for 20.00 on craiglist and I can get more online ( I found the site) if I needed to.  My question is...with my BM dresses and a backyard outdoor wedding...do you think this will look silly?

Do I need to tie them in elsewhere?  Should I keep them ivory or change the color to black or silver?  My dress is diamond white and I'm posting pics of my BM dresses and the lanterns.  Thanks ladies!

Any other ideas on how to cut costs?  My florist is KILLING ME!  Not that we cant afford it, but my flowers are almost the cost of my recpetion itself!

I'm all about changing it up from the standard bridesmaid flowers. Personally, mine will be carrying a small, long, clutch with a few flowers coming out the side. However I just can't picture lanterns. Is it a night wedding? I just get visions of somebody leading me through the woods to grandma's house or something. Sorry i'm not much help. Just can't wrap my brain around it. But if you think it will look good then more power to you. It is YOUR wedding after all.

CHECK IKEA.COM!!!! they're uber-cheap on lanterns!

as for bridesmaids carrying them, i think it depends on what they do with them during the ceremony. if you have them stand there holding them the whole time, it may look goofy, but if they came in and hung them say on shepherd's hooks lining the aisle or sat them along the front, particularly at night, it could be really beautiful. just my $.02!

I agree with this - i can't picture carrying a lantern - I guess I have to see it to understand what's going on. But I agree, do what you want!!

Also, I would think that if the girls were to carry lanterns, I would definitely tie them in elsewhere....what about in the invites and table centerpieces? I think if there is a running theme, it could be really great! But, with the girls simply carrying them and the lanterns not being tied in elsewhere, it would stick out to me as being slightly strange!

Have you priced other florists if she's too expensive? I would think that it shouldn't be a problem to get flower bouquets under $40 - using in season flowers, I would think you could get them for around $25 or $30 - my BM bouquets are $30 each...

I emailed my florist and asked her to keep it UNDER 40.00 per pop and to send me flowers that were in season.  What did she do?  She, of course, send me a quote for large calla and said they would be 40.00.  No other flower options, and then said we could "change" things once she got my 500.00 deposit!  GRRR I HATE MY FLORIST!  But, I don't want to change because her other prices are reasonable and she's doing the lighting and drapery at my reception.

I just said lanterns because I know a knottie is doing those and people though it was cute.  I don't rememeber how they tied it in.

Thanks ladies!  Any other unique ideas?  How about just one bit white flower?  HELP ME!

How about fans?  Do you think black silk tip fans would look pretty with a white or silver floral design?  Or maybe white tip witha black floral design?  I can also have their names put on them on so they can be gifts.  They are WAY cheaper than the bouqetes.  Heres a link to the site.  I could also do lace because my dress has some lace on it.  What do you think?  Here is the site.  My wedding is outdoors in May in IA.  I don't think it will be real hot,but perhaps it will be.

You can have them carry seashell necklaces!

i'm having my girls carry lanterns instead of flowershaha

we're having a night time wedding with lots of candlite throughout the ceremony though, so it fits in that way. i'm not having other lanterns anywhere else though.

to cut back on costs have you considered having them carry one large bloom? or what about a little basket with a few big blooms in it (sort of disguising the basket), sort of overflowing? the fan idea is cute too.
