I own a couple of pieces of Tiffany silver but I wonder where it is made. USA or China? Anyone know?

You know, Tiffany get knocked a lot, but for everything except round brilliant diamonds, I love Tiffany. Isabelle's tanzanite Legacy is one of the most beautiful things I've seen- ever. It doesn't hurt that Tiffany is responsible for bringing tanzanite to us. And I love tanzanite. Total Other than diamonds, it's my favorite stone.Tiffany silver is great. Tiffany silver flatware is the best this country has to offer. Tiffany silver declasse? Don't listen to the haters! It's reasonably enough priced and if you like, wear it! People just want to feel superior. Hating on Tiffany is one way to do this. I'm buying a Tiffany ring. A similar Cartier ring is double the price. The design, the alloy, and manufacturing process are not inferior to the Cartier ring in any way. Tiffany silver is excellent alloy too. Don't listen to them. They don't know what they're talking about.

She has a few pieces and swears their silver is crap. She said she's bought better silver in Mexico. I have no idea as i can't wear silver. just giving her opinion.

I buy silver from Tiffany's because I like the design and have found it challenging to find timeless simple pieces elcewhere, not because I think Tiffany's has better quality silver. I will say, there is something about those blue cases they come in. I have had a braclet for 6 years in the case that has not tarnished. I have another necklace that I have had for 2 years that I left in my jewelry box, and it needs some help now, in the way of silver polish.

Myself being a non *real* jewelry type in the teens, my mother INSISTED i have something from tiffanys when I graduated from college. This was during the time the charm bracelets were all the rage and of course being the social outcast i was, i refused to get one. So we looked around the store - i didnt like the pearls becuase the sales lady insisted that they dont carry "small" pearls (i have small ears), mom was not about to drop 2k on a saphire ring (don't blame her) and those cool lock charms were not even on tiffanys radar. and at that time i did not wear necklaces. All hope seemed lost until i found this - possibly the most unitarian thing there. I have not taken it off since! Now i don't mind tiffany's so much ![]() _____________________________ |

I haven't read The Washingtonienne (yet - any good?), but I've seen the attitude: I think it stems from a weird kind of anti-democratic snobbery. Tiffany's is supposed to be a luxury brand! How can it be properly luxurious if [insert sniff] the masses can afford it? Woe, woe unto the elite! Or something like that. I don't have any experience with Tiffany's myself, but a lot of their charms look adorable (I have my eye on the little taxi cab for one of these days). Enjoy what you love!

In the 1870s and 1880s, Tiffany's silver holloware was arguably the most imaginative and exquisitely made in America, and American silver was arguably the most interesting and best made in the world. I find most of their current silver jewelry tedious, though, especially the stuff with their name on it.

Allergic reaction. Within a few minutes of putting it on, my skin gets red, and itchy and if i don't take it off, a rash . Same thing with white gold. Elle - you are probably allergic to nickel. Have you tried talking to artisan silversmiths? Many alloy their own silver and can use a copper/silver alloy which shouldn't trigger allergies. Check what type of solder they use, but a zinc/copper/silver solder should be safe for you as well. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Who has questioned Tiffany flatware? If someone has, then when did it change from the great quality flatware that it used to be? It was always the finest and heaviest! When I got married (in 1977) I chose "Faneuil" by Tiffany, which was the pattern that my mother's best friend in college (1930's) had had. My mother had had a flatware pattern by Georg Jensen (which she later divided between my brother and me). I assure you that my flatware and that of my mother's best friend were (and are) wonderful! I like Tiffany's silver. I think it's high quality. Most of my pieces are marked Spain. I have that same pendant, and I get compliments on it all the time. It's cute and funky.

Maybe you're thinking of me? I said Tiffany's holloware in the 1870s and 1880s was among the most wonderful silver the world has ever known. I didn't say their silver flatware was no longer wonderful. They stopped producing it themselves, closed down their New Jersey manufacturing plant, and sold the dies to another company in (I believe) the 1980s, but that company continued to produce the patterns for them, using the old dies and techniques; perhaps they still do, I don't know. But I certainly believe you that their flatware was of wonderful quality recently. No, I just said I didn't much care for the silver jewelry, which seems boring to me, especially compared to the astonishingly imaginative and exquisitely crafted table silver they produced in the second half of the 19th century.

Date: 7/28/2008 9:40:12 PM Author: glitterata Maybe you're thinking of me? Absolutely not! I understood that you were speaking only about the jewelry, and especially about the jewelry that was brandishing the name across its chest rather than simply having it stamped on as a hallmark in some discreet locale! I found your knowledgeable commentary on holloware interesting. Most of what I know about silver is from my mother, the rest is from Pricescope. I learned a lot from a poster whom you may recall, fire&ice, who taught me a lot about Georg Jensen in America during World War II. I have no antique background, so all I have is the knowledge of what my own mother or her friends bought. There is so much to be learned from those of you who really know what you are talking about! I should add that I have purchased a couple of books on Georg Jensen silver to help remedy my ignorance, but as I have not yet read them, they have not yet done the trick! I did not mean to quash discussion of Tiffany silver jewelry! I am a yellow gold lover myself and both my daughter and I have yellow gold charm bracelets, but chacun a son gout! (I have spent many hours defending yellow gold to women who grew up in an age where only platinum was palatable to them, women who saw yellow gold as somehow déclassé! I wear as much high karat gold as I can; I own a lot of 18K; 22k; and now 24k gold jewelry pieces.) Deborah

I only wear white metal so Tiffany's silver it a perfect casual option. It can be used to dress up or down an outfit and I think 'most' of the pieces (or the ones I like) are timeless and will be en vogue for a long time to come. I don't look at the pieces as heirloom quality-the silver jewelry that is-however all of my pieces have held up to years of constant wear. The only thing I've ever had serviced is my silver bead bracelet. I had that sent away for cleaning last year. With the exception of one ring, I've purchased each piece myself as an adult. FI purchased a silver ring for me-once again, when I was an adult. I fundamentally have a problem with children wearing $300 necklaces etc. I have the same issue with children carrying coach bags. I think it creates a sense of entitlement and undermines any attempt at teaching them about money and the value of the dollar. Mexican silver is amazingly beautiful. I have several pieces. The style however is usually more rustic and bohemian than T&Co. |

Date: 7/29/2008 1:55:53 PM Author: Hudson_Hawk I only wear white metal I rest my case. Just kidding. Hudson_Hawk is very tactful. My point is that anyone can take a personal preference (for example a preference for platinum over yellow gold or a preference for platinum and gold over silver) and then decide that a personal preference should be a code of behavior for the masses. One should wear what s/he likes. Everyone should also be entitled to his own opinion. Like Glitterata, I am not terribly enamored of the Tiffany silver pieces that say, "Tiffany", but I am also not an admirer of purses that say, "Coach". That is my preference. My daughter carries a Coach bag; I carry a quilted Vera Bradley one that costs a fraction of what hers does. Deborah ![]() A Girl's Best Friend |
