Hi, PS'ers!! This is my very first post! I've learned so much from the PS forums during the past couple of months while my boyfriend and I have been searching for engagement rings. I'm in love with cushion cut diamonds and we finally found the perfect one last week (2.29 ct modified cushion brilliant (i love the "crushed ice" look!), G-VS1, 7.4mmX8.2mm)! Well, maybe it's not absolutely perfect because even though the diamond is beautiful head-on, when I look at the stone at an angle (for example, when my hand is resting on the table), I see areas that just don't sparkle at all and really look "glassy." One jeweler told me that this was due to lower depth percentage (63%) and resulting smaller number of facets, and that I just need to keep looking. Another jeweler told me that all cushions have these "windows" at angles due to the corner facets, and that I'd better just accept it or pick another cut. Does anyone know which jeweler is right? Thanks for your help! |

Do you have pictures? That would help a ton! Also, who certified the stone?

Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures but I will definitely be going back to the jeweler to take some. Also, the stone is GIA certified.

You should probably keep looking, but pictures would help a great deal. You might want to check out mark at engagement rings direct or goodoldgold.com. They can produce some very beautiful cushions. Crushed ice cushions often lack in appearance, but I've seen some come from GOG and ERD that are stunning!

Date: 7/12/2008 6:50:05 PM Usually a lower depth % does not result in a smaller number of facets!!!Author:Nuggette Hi, PS'ers!! This is my very first post! Thanks for your help! As far as the second jeweler's advice you got..., sounds like a "make's sense" type of advice... Usually the "crashed glass" look is based on a four-fold type of pavilion faceting arrangement (see image attached)..., if the main facets are cut too shallow (in angle) combined with a painted brillianteering...., it would turn glassy with the slightest tilt of the stone... ********************** |
