I saw my Mom yesterday and she was wearing her e-ring. First I cleaned it for her and then I had a look at it with my 10x loop and the Ideal scope which has a higher magnification. I could see NO inclusions what so ever! I've looked at VVS diamonds and saw their inclusions through the loupe, but with this one - NONE. Could it be IF? I thought those were pretty rare. Just so you know. It was purchased around 1959. It's a marquise cut but very shallow - looks 1.5 carats but it's really just over 1 carat. My dad said he paid below wholesale because he knew someone - he thinks he paid $900 at the time and it was appraised for $9,000 a long while back. I've never seen such a clean diamond! It's not as sparkly as some others due to it being so shallow and the culet is a bit large in my opinion. Anyone out there know how rare IFs are and if they think this could be one? They don't have the appraisal anymore, but I'm going to urge them to get another one done. Tanya |

With all the due respect, I'm really surprised by the fact you could find the inclusions in VVS diamonds using simply a loupe. I mean, it's difficult even for an expert to find those. Marquises and many other fancy shapes can be very tricky to grade because there are a lot of reflections. To be safe I'd say your mom's stone could be VS+ in quality. Sure, it could be IF, but to be honest I think your dad would very likely remember the jeweler saying: 'It's a flawless diamond'. Get the diamond professionally appraised and let us know the results. Best of luck and I really hope it turns out to be IF

IF diamonds are obviously rarer than other diamonds, but they're still not CRAZY rare, especially in the size you're talking about. A quick search at some vendors' websites turned up hundreds of IF diamonds available in all sorts of sizes and colors. Pricescope actually shows more IF diamonds available than VVS1 diamonds in the 1-1.15 ct range. Still, it would be very nice if the diamond in question is IF. It's definitely worth getting an appraisal.

Giangi - he didn't buy it from a jeweler, just from someone he knew through someone else who sells diamonds. And, my dad wouldn't remember if they told him it once belonged to the Queen of England - he just wanted a nice looking diamond for my mom. It probably isn't IF, but more likely VVS1 or 2. I'll have them get it appraised and let you all know the results. As I said, it was cut very shallow so they're aren't as many facets as you would normally expect so any inclusions have no where to hide IMO. Thanks for your opinions. Tanya |
