Having an online diamond set locally - Is this dangerous? |

I bought a 1ct princess cut diamond at GOG and found a setting I like at a local jewelry store. I was ready to purchase it when the salesperson told me I had to sign a form stating that if anything goes wrong during the setting process (e.g. the diamond chips or cracks or anything) the store would not be liable. I was like...okay...sounds somewhat risky, but sure, it'll probably be fine. So I was ready to go for it, but then a manager came over and told me that it was a very bad idea to have the store set it and that it is customary and strongly advised that I have the people who sold me the diamond set it. They offered to sell me the mounting to ship back to GOG with the stone. Is it really very bad to have a third party set a stone? Has anyone else shared this experience? I *could* send everything back to GOG but that would take a few days, versus same day service in the store. Thoughts? Thanks! |

I'd play it safe and send it back to GOG to set. Things happen and princess stones are more prone to chipping. Not to mention that you don't know how good the benchman is at the local store...

If the store itself is telling you not to get it set there then take the setting and run a mile! Take the setting back to GOG and have them set it. Or better still, can you find a similar setting at GOG, saves any hassles. Wedding Date Take 2: 26th November 2009! |

I would not take the risk, either. Imagine if something happened!!! My 2 cents... buy the setting and send it with the stone to GOG --or-- choose a setting already at GOG. And THAT'S my story and I'm sticking to it! |
