We went back to SO's home town for his dad's 60th the other night. During the night I helped out handing out food etc. At one stage SO was talking to his mum in another room when his dad came in and said, jokingly, "what kind of daughter-in-law are you? You haven't even been taking photos!" I responded with- "not one yet, more like daughter-in-sin"  - it doesn't really make sense when you actually think about it but it just came out. SO and his mum overheard and made a little joking comment about it, but then SO brought it up again on the way home and I think he is pleased that his family see me as a long-term partner for him. This has also occurred with my family recently- my mum wasn't aware that we had made a commitment to each other and was very concerned when I told her we were planning on buying a house together. Then we had a conversation in which I told her we had made a commitment to each other and we do discuss those things and her attitude changed and she became really excited for us. He also, of his own volition told me the on the way up that he can easily imagine us as being married and having children and then when we were home he turned to me and asked me to spend the rest of his life with him, without any prompting or discussion about engagement etc from me  ! Feeling quite happy at the moment!Right, now back to studying for my exam on Wed afternoon!!! |

Thanks Gwen! Do you get to see your SO's family much? I bet the LDR thing would make it hard. I only get to see them two or three times a year as they live in another town. Its sad as I would like to get to know them a lot better which is difficult when I rarely see them!

I have seen more of J's family than I have of my own this year! See, I have been in England since September, studying at grad school, and J and his family all live here in England. They live about 200 miles away from school, but J and I saw each other just about every other weekend, and we'd take turns traveling. I also spent Christmas, New Year's and Easter with them this year. But my situation isn't exactly normal--I think with a more usual LDR, I'd hardly see his family at all. As it stands, his nieces have been asking, "Where's that girl?" (I haven't seen them for a while) and referring to me as "Kris friend" (my real name is Kristin, and when J tried to tell one of them that my name is Kristin and I'm his girlfriend--she's the youngest one and is still learning to talk so that's what she came up with ).

Yay I love when that happens. It's such a huge validation and there's nothing better than having mom and dad on your side  My boyfriend's mother makes jokes with him all the time. If we go to Orlando she'll say "make sure you don't get your mother-in-law upset!" But I absolutely LOVE when his father calls me his daughter. Have you guys talked about marriage yet?

Sorry didn't see your reply before Fieryred! We have quite a bit. We know that we will get married, know how where etc, just not when. I am ready to get engaged but he wants to wait a little longer for various reasons. But we have discussed marriage, children etc extensively and we have just bought a house together.

That's very sweet! My brother and his better half decided not to get legally married, although they are spiritually married (for 12 years now), and at some point around 8 years ago we all just started calling her SIL/DIL etc. She is definitely part of the family! And that kind of validation doesn't just mean they are accepting you, it means they are EMBRACING you.  Nice feeling, huh?
