Just wanted to share my recent mobile phone upgrade experience (my coworker's wife clued me in to this simple strategy). My almost 2-year old T-Mobile phone (Nokia 8290) was starting to go on the fritz, so I went in to see what they could offer on an upgrade (new Nokia 6610). Well, they pull up my account info, and based on my history (kind of like the comp system in Vegas!  ) they tell me I can have it for $150 (the same price offered for a new activation). I didn't get it at that time.A couple of days later I call T-Mobile's 800-number, and can't even get through to a live operator. I call back, and "press 3" to cancel my service. Well, I get an operator right away, and when I mention I was thinking of going with AT&T since my Nokia is starting to fail, she offers me the 6610 for $35! Apparently, they have "specials" they can only offer after you inquire about cancelling your account. They'll ask you several times if there is anything they can do to keep you with T-Mobile (or whoever your carrier is) before letting you actually cancel service. Hopefully someone can benefit from this info!
