What type of place are you looking for? How much are you looking to spend?

If you're going for "fancy expensive upscale luxury hotel", the best place in town is hands down the Four Seasons Biltmore. Very old school Santa Barbara and right across from a gorgeous beach, although really pricey (around $600 a night on the weekends)

If you want something more in the thick of things (and a little less pricey), the Canary Hotel is pretty new (they finished it maybe 3 years ago?) and is right downtown, a block off the main street. Definitely walking distance to shops, food, the beach, etc. I haven't stayed there but I've been to a wedding there and to their lounge for happy hour and it seems nice. I think their rates are a little less than half of what the Biltmore is.

If you have something more specific in mind, let me know and I can think about it.

Have a great time! Santa Barbara is certainly a beautiful place.

"Ouch! I spilled some on my lap, burning my leg, but I don't mind. I'm with you."

If you don't want to break the bank, but still want nice rooms and a good location, I'd recommend the Eagle Inn. We stayed there 2-3 years ago, had a lovely room with fireplace and jacuzzi, and were within walking distance of the pier, State St, etc. I just noticed that they have a last minute specials section that you might want to check out.
