I have to say this is a really wonderful, infomative place! To get to the point... The reason I've come out of hiding is because of some problems with my setting, and I'm very worried - I found a huge gap between a prong and the diamond - only the tip is touching the diamond. Some background info: it's a 1.13 classic Tiffany solitaire, and we had the ring resized from size 6 to size 3. I only got the ring last Friday. I haven't bumped it, dropped it, or had it caught on something. So I was rather surprised to find that huge gap on Monday. I took it back the next day, and was told the problem would be fixed in a week. The SA didn't seem to think it was too big a deal, and said that she would send the ring back to be checked. I'm just wondering if this is just a simple case of a bent prong? Or was it just bad workmanship? Could something like this happen to the integrity of the setting as the ring was being resized? Will fixing it affect the setting in any way? It's very worrying because I really love my ring. This was the stone that really "spoke" to me and one of the reasons we went for Tiff's was because I loved that setting - DF and I aren't in the US right now and given we're not familiar with the jewelry market here, we decided to go with the original. I'm just really concerned about my ring, and, truth be told, a little disappointed that this happened! Sorry for the long post! Again, I want to thank all of you for making PS such a wonderful place I've attached a picture of the problem, crossing my fingers it will post the first time!

mrssalvo Ideal Rock Total Posts: 16,859 Last Post: 11/23/2009 Member Since: 1/3/2005	I'm not expert but it looks like the stone wasn't set correctly to begin with. it should be seated tightly. I'm glad you have taken it in to be fixed. I disagree with the SA, that is a HUGE deal. the stone could very easily be knocked loose. Tiffany should fix it for you and return it good as new. ----------------------------- A deal is only a deal if you are getting exactly what you want.

If this was already the case when they bought the ring, I'm surprised that their quality control didn't see this. It could have been a snag but we will never know unless you noticed this when you bought it. Also, is this a white gold setting or a platinum setting? The reason I'm asking is that platinum metal is harder than the typical white gold. It should be an easy fix for them and should be good as new when you get it back. Don't worry too much about it... The stone did not feel loose, so I'm guessing the other 5 prongs were doing their job. It's really my fault that I didn't look carefully at the setting when buying the ring. I think I was so focused on the stone it never crossed my mind to examine the setting!

They cut the shank to remove the excess metal, then rebent it smaller and soldered the gap. Going smaller will pull away from the head.
