Hi pricescopers,

I'm thinking about buying this ring from Tiffanys for my wedding band.  The ring costs 7,700 before tax.  I live in Europe ... sooo I am wondering if I will have to pay tax on this ring if I purchase from US.  I contacted Tiffanys in San Fran and they said that I would have to pay tax which would bring the cost of the ring to over 9000 - a little over my budget!  I will have to pay duty on the ring when it comes through customs here - but I've factored this in already.

Does anybody know if the tax situation is different if I purchase from Tiffanys in a different state?

I know this question is a little bring so I really appreciate anyone who takes the time to answer!

Thanks x

I don't know which states it is (non-native US'er here) but some states don't have any sales tax. Could you buy from one of them?

Thanks for replying Angeline.  I heard that some states don't have sales tax either but I don't know which ones.  Maybe someone from the US can chime in and help me out.

Here's the thing, if Tiffany's has a location where you are in Europe, then they'll have to charge you tax there probably. If not, they shouldn't charge you tax if you are having the item shipped to you in Europe. You WOULD have to pay tax if you bought the ring IN SF while in the US.

If it's shipped you should just have to pay the import taxes in your country.

So if star17 buys it in a state of the US that has no sales tax, while she is actually here in the states and wears it I guess back home, then no tax gets paid? But wait when you enter your home country you probably have to declare such an expensive item (technically) and then pay duties and/or taxes?

Yes, she'd have to pay tax in her own country but I *thought* she wouldn't have to pay US tax regardless...but maybe that isn't right? Not sure.

Neatfreak, I believe that's correct, that if she buys an item in, say, Oregon, she will then pay the tax/duty for her home location when she returns. I think that's how it would work, at any rate! I know if I buy a car in OR, I then have to pay taxes on it in WA, but that would be it as far as taxes go.
