D and I have been working with a pug rescue (thanks MrsPolkaDot -- we are using the rescue you recommended and they have been FANTASTIC) and on Sunday, we're making a 5-hour drive to pick up our new fur baby!  He's a 3 year-old pug who was surrendered due to some eye injuries for which his owner had not sought veterinary care.  Unfortunately that means that our little guy is mostly blind (he can see shadows) but we've been told he's sweet as can be, and can navigate around just fine!

Just wanted to share our delight   I have attached a photo.  Unfortunately his eyes look a bit buggered in the other ones that were taken (it was just after veterinary treatment) so I'll hold off on face photos until we get him home!

Today is D's birthday, and he's said it's like a birthday present for him.  Before all of this was planned, I had booked us in for a nice hotel tomorrow night and a 5-course tasting menu; so we'll just have to enjoy and then get on the road early the next day!

Awwww he's so cute!  Congratulations!

Would he by any chance, have pigmentary keratitis?  That's what my pug has.

We need more pics when you get him!

Thanks everyone!

Mia, he does has PK in one eye.  You can really tell in the photos.  But his other eye is blind due to a pretty traumatic incident and no veterinary care.  We are going to take him to an eye specialist in a couple of weeks!

I have another goofy pic of him.  You can see that his eyes are in pretty bad shape, but what a cutie!

Awww poor guy!  He is really a gorgeous pug though!  I mean, absolutely beautiful!

We caught my lil guy's pk early enough that it hasn't affected his vision.  But you can see it very easily in pictures.  I am just kicking myself that we didn't catch it sooner.  After he was diagnosed, I looked back at old pictures and I could actually see it in pictures from a year before!  We give him eye drops every day and they can't make it go away, but they prevent it from growing.  Anyway, I'll post a picture later so you can see.

Let us know how introducing him to his new home goes!

Congratulations! He's ADORABLE! What a sweet face.

Rescue dogs (and pugs in general, of course) are the best. We recently rescued our second pug, and he's the most affectionate, goofy little guy. Have you had a pug before? If not, get ready for non-stop cuddling, especially from a male. Both of ours, male and female, are draped across our laps constantly.

Yay... Congrats!  What a cutie!  I am so excited and happy for you guys!  I am really beyond thrilled that you are taking care of this baby who obviously needs someone to see beyond his issue to the sweet pup he is.  And happy b-day to D too!  What a great weekend!

And here is a picture where you can see his pk.  You can really see it when he gets "blue eyes" from the camera flash.  Oh and if you're wonering why he wears boots and sits so funny, its because he is partially paralyzed because of a degenerative disease.  He doesn't know he's "different" though, and is happy as can be!

Hi Oliver!  Mia, please give him a big kiss for me! (I know that's no sacrifice for you!)  He is a cutie.

And krissie - what a wonderful thing you and your FI have done.  We need more people like you guys in the world.

ETA: I just noticed Oliver's booties!  Looks like he's got a mom who really cares about him...how nice.

Thanks everyone!  It has been an eventful 3 days.  We made the 5 hr drive, picked him up, and poor little guy was sick in the car on the way back.  He had a deworming treatment the morning before we picked him up, so his foster mom warned us that he may have vomiting and diahrrea for a couple of days.  He was super excited for Sunday and most of yesterday, but then became pretty lethargic last night.  He's still having the runs (although the vomiting stopped last night) but this morning he's totally lethargic and not interested in food and water at all.  So we've got an appointment for 2:20 at the vet this afternoon.  Poor little guy!

Before he started getting really lethargic, he was really playful and cute, loved going outside and meeting other doggies!  He hasn't met a stranger yet.  He was definitely bumping into stuff at the beginning, but now seems to navigate the apartment just fine.  I'd say he's 90% blind.

Mia, your little guy is so precious.  I love his expression!

Oh poor little baby!

Keep us updated on how he's doing.

Hopefully, its just a bout of depression...

Hopefully, its just a bout of depression...

The vet said he had a bit of blood in his poo, so he's having the sample shipped to a lab to confirm if there is anything funky going on.  He was also given some subcutaneous fluids because he's been throwing up a bit.  He's still lethargic and looking a bit disoriented, but has perked up slightly from this morning.  If he carries on puking over night, we will have to take him to the hospital tomorrow morning.  We're pretty worried.

Aww, Krissie, I'm so sorry to hear about your little man's troubles. I can imagine that it is very overwhelming to bring home a new dog and then have him be sick on top of that. He is in excellent hands though, and it sounds like both you and your vet are being very on top of things and attentive. I hope he is feeling better very, very soon! Please keep us updated, and share pictures with us once the little man is feeling up to it.

I am late to this, how is your baby?

Nothing is more sacred as the bond between horse and rider...no other creature can ever become so emotionally close to a human as a horse. When a horse dies, the memory lives on because an enormous part of his owner's heart, soul, very existence dies also...but that can never be laid to rest, it is not meant to be...

Thanks Mia and Lorelei for checking back in!  He seems to be improving every day.  We have had him on a bland diet for the past 3 days, plus anti-diahhreal medicine and ear drops.  He's quite perky when he wants to be, but also sleeps a lot!  Mainly he just loves to chill on the couch with his people, or wrestle D. on the floor and have his belly rubbed.  He squeals like a little piggy when he's excited!  He's a good boy.

Napoleon hasn't met a stranger yet - he loves going for walks and getting coo'ed at by drunk college girls   We have a little bandana on him and it's just too adorable when combined with his little cowboy bow-legs.

His eyes are pretty bad.  We really don't think he can see at all, poor little fella.  He's slowly learning how to navigate without playing bumper dog (bouncing off every surface).

And he has formed an "entente cordiale" with our kitty, Tino, who thinks he has outsmarted Napoleon but doesn't realize that Napoleon simply can't see him .

I'll attach a couple of pics now!

Oh Krissie - my eyes teared up reading this sweet story. I'm so glad you were able to rescue this sweet baby and give him the loving home he so clearly deserves. He is just adorable, and I'm so glad to hear that he is starting to feel better - I know change is often hard on animals, and combined with medical issues, it may have just been (temporarily) too much for his little system.

Good for you for rescuing him (and your kitty!) - can't wait to see new pics of the little guy settling into his new home.

Thank you!!  It almost makes me tear up when I see how happy and goofy he is.  Imagine all that he went through, and he still trusts people - it's amazing and a heck of a life lesson!!

Mrs Polka Dot - are you going to the MAPR event in Maryland tomorrow?  We will be there!!!!!

Krissie - isn't that amazing how resilient animals can be? My DH and I both volunteer at our local animal shelter, working with the dogs there (training, socializing, walking, helping with adoptions, etc...) and we really get to see it. It always amazes me to see how dogs that have been mistreated or neglected or whatever can just completely trust and love humans. I agree - its a great life lesson and very inspiring.

Have fun at your event tomorrow - lots of pugs in one place, I'm not sure I could handle the cuteness
