Hi there again!

So if you've read my previous thread i was asking for advice where to look for an engagement ring in London.

Well with all the talk of the strong pound to the dollar i was speaking to my bf and we've decided that going to New York may well be a good possibility!

So which jewellers are recommended by PSers in New York?

Do you think it would be possible to find and buy and get it resized (if needed) in 4/5 days?

We have a budget of around £4000 or around $8000.

This is an example of what i have in mind......

Anyone know of anything similar?

Thanks!

GoodOldGold, which is one of the favorite community "online" vendors, has their shop in Massapequa Park, NY. It's about an hour's drive from New York City according to Google Maps. Give them a call and let them know you're coming; I'm sure they'd love to work with you.

I'm not super familiar with the settings that GOG does, but I'm certain they'd be able to find something similar to what you posted.

Since you're the one posting here, I take it you and your bf are looking for the ring together? That'll make it a lot easier to make that trip :)

I believe you should be able to get some sort of international driving permit or something and be able to rent a car to drive out there.

Edited to add: if you're gonna work with GOG, you should consider narrowing down your selection a bit by looking online, and then making the final decision when you get there in person. Be sure to let them know ahead of time what you're looking for so they can have everything ready when you get there.

And I think there's something you can do to have customs refund the money you paid in sales tax since you're from the UK, though you should probably research that a bit further.

Yeah i told my bf that i would like to be part of the buying process and we have since discovered that he would have probaby gone for a ring that is completely different from what we are looking at now.  We're both really enjoying looking at everything and trying to decide together.  He wants me to love the ring and i want him to love the ring as well so looking together seems to make sense.  So it seems to have worked out!  He still gets to decide when and where he is going to propose.  We've talked about it a lot recently and we both know that its going to happen in the next little while so thought we would start looking now!

Thanks for the advice!

Mark Turnowski at Engagement Rings Direct is another in NY I would recommend checking out! Give him a call to set up an appointment, to be sure you get some time with him... he is a pleasure to work with (I dealt with him via phone and email but many here have had the opportunity to go in and see him and have nothing but good things to say). Also, you can let him know in advance what you are interested in seeing so that he can have some things ready to show you.

Some PS'ers have had a great experience with SuperbCert in downtown Manhattan. I've never been, but I've emailed with them and they've always been really nice.

Are you looking to go to a high end store where you buy a finished ring with a name brand, such as Cartier, DeBeers, or Tiffany etc, or are you looking to go do a diamond company where you select your setting and stone separately, and likely save money over the "brands"? Or are you looking at both? People can probably give you better advice if they know what you are looking for.

Luckily many of the high end stores and also the diamond district merchants are located near eachother in midtown. I'm sure New Yorkers will have better advice than me, but I spent a day or so just looking while visiting NYC, and there were tons of options!

Oh, and I wouldn't try to have it resized while you are there. If you have a good jeweler back at home it shouldn't be a big deal to have it done upon your return. No need to put extra time pressure on yourself for the NY trip!

I had some communication with GOG recently and they were really friendly and quick to respond to my emails.  They explained that there is a train you can take from NY which takes you pretty much to their store.

GOG were great. Easy to get to by Train from Penn Station to Massapequa Park and a ten minute walk. Gogle maps shows exact location and even pictures of shopping mall where they are located. Also easy to geta taxi from the local station... May even offer to collect you..... JON will guide you to whatever you wish and genuinely seems keen to help....

I'm not sure why customs (federal) would refund sales tax (state/local). But even paying sales tax, if they wear the ring back and don't have to pay VAT, they are probably still ahead by $800 or so. Am I missing something? I don't really understand how VATs work, but I believe its around 18% in GB (versus, NY 8%? 10%??).

I would say GOG because I have dealt with them and they are fantastic but a lot of PSer's have also gone to ERD and I have heard great things about them as well

Be sure to narrow your diamond and setting choices down before you go and that way your long weekend will be productive :) GL with the search :)

+1 for a great stone from Gary at ERD.

If you are paying cash and are good at negotiating the tax shouldn't be an issue.

Ditto make sure you call Good old Gold and Egagement Rings Direct ahead of time so they can have stuff ready for you to look at and send them a picture of the ring you like so they can find something similar to show you.  Have a wonderful time shopping
