Hello! I saw a beautiful 11 carat spring green colored tourmaline emerald cut, at a B&M for around $2000. Does this seem about right? Also would this make a nice looking ring for a size 6 finger or be to large? Sorry if this is to general of a question, just looking for a little advise on colored stones! Thanks!

I'm afraid it's too general. There are a number of factors at play in gemstone pricing -- colour (hue, tone, saturation); cut; clarity, rarity (green tourmaline is not especially rare).

Should it have some sort of a cert like diamonds do, to determine those things?

Only very few coloured stones ever have lab reports. Coloured stones are a whole new ball game than diamonds with far more variables. We'd really need to see pictures to have any sort of idea.

I am just learning about colored stones. I have fallen in love with blue green tourmalines!! I first noticed them when I tried on a Tiffany legacy with one. It was beautiful. I was looking at some blue green tourmalines yesterday on myjewelrysource.com and on AJS Gems. It seems like the stones themselves are not that expensive per carat (although huge range, as others said.) The settings are very expensive. Depending on what was at your local store, possibly the setting accounted for 2/3 or more of the total cost. ETA I just noticed your price was for an 11 carat stone, not set. I have no idea on whether the price is fair, but it sounds lovely!

No cert done on them unless they are rare. Unfortunately, coloured gemstones are even more difficult to buy then diamonds. Pricing mainly depends on the colour and within that colour category, you have to consider the hue, saturation and tone. Ideally, the hue should be a pure green, vivid saturation and medium to medium dark tone. Wouldn't we all love our gemstones then. Of course, size, clarity and how well it is cut plays a factor in pricing too.A couple of good pictures will help somewhat. Here's a bit of reading to understand hue, tone and saturation: http://www.multicolour.com/catalogue/columns/column12002.html

To me, 11 carats sounds huge for a ring. But really, it all depends on how big you like your jewelry to be.

This price was for just the stone. I am getting a new setting for my diamond and was looking for something to put in my old setting, which is yellow gold with about 1.7 carats of baguettes and round stone on the band. So the jeweler suggested a colored stone and showed me the tourmaline. Amber |
