We had planned on going to Hawaii, but given the recent airline woes, the prices now skyrocketed and we have to now rule it out!  Unfortunately, FI never got his passport because we thought we would not need one. Now we are 5.5 weeks away from the wedding and scrambling for honeymoon ideas. Help!! Would like somewhere beachy/relaxing but also need a lot of fun activities to mix it up, like shopping, sight seeing, etc. Ideas??

I don't have ideas for a honeymoon in the US, but I wanted to mention that if you really wanted to have a honeymoon out of the country, you probably still could. Expedited passports are supposed to take 3 weeks, and FI and I just got our passports a few weeks ago and mine took under 3 weeks (non-expedited), and his took about 3 weeks (also non-expedited). When we went they estimated it would take 4-6 weeks for a regular passport, but that it was likely to be closer to 4 weeks. We had been worried before about how long they might take since people had been saying there was huge backlog on passports, but ours came surprisingly quick.

No passport required for puerto rico - may be cheaper to fly there depending where in the US you are...

How about Hilton Head, or Charleston, SC, and Savannah is not too far from either for a day trip or two? Or how about the Florida Keys and tack on a trip to Miami (South Beach) at the end? Handbags always fit! |

Go with the Florida Keys. The water is blue and warm, the beaches are white and the shopping and activities are great. I went sea kayaking and say hemmingway's house in th same day, so there are a lot of options.

Florida, San Diego (LOVE), Maine coast, VA/NC/SC beaches, Kiawah Island (SC) are some ideas. I love Charlottesville, VA. Monitcello is there, mountains, shopping, hiking, horsebackriding, great B&Bs, etc. Asheville NC (Biltmore Estate). All of these places are fabulous. Depends what you're in the mood for!

We ended up in Catalina Island, off the coast from Long Beach CA, for our honeymoon when the planes were grounded the week of our wedding (9/11/01), it was relaxing and cute with a little beach and really clear water.

I second Charleston and Savannah, also have hear wonderful things about Amelia Island and Saint Simon's Island.

I am sorry! Unfortunately we may be in the same boat. All of the options here are great! I personally love San Diego on the West Coast. And as for the East Coast I am partial to the Outerbanks in North Carolina. There's not a ton to do, but you could go out to eat and relax on the beach. You may even be able to rent one of the beach houses which would be awesome. There's also an outdoor play nearby on the Lost Colony which I really enjoyed the last time I saw it. There's some lighthouses and all kinds of water sports options. I am from VA, but don't go to VA beach very often. It's a bit too crowded for me, but it may be what you're looking for! Myrtle Beach in SC is also a serious hotspot now. There's so much to do there!

Florida keys are wonderful if you're planning for a beachy vacation. There's a great marine park there too, if you're into snorkeling or diving. If you or your FI is interested in wildlife and nature scenery, the Everglades are breathtaking.

We're going to CA - hitting Napa Valley, San Fran, San Diego, and Big Sur. We were going to go to Italy, but the prices just killed us. I am excited about this alternative though!

I just wanted to agree with others that recommended Florida! Key West is great. Miami is fantastic for shopping and nightlife, while you also get the beach and relaxation! I also love the gulf side for feeling a little more secluded. And I also wanted to add that my fiancee and I just got our passports a few months ago and it took less than 2 weeks! And we didn't even pay extra to have them expedited. We heard they take forever to get so when we were applying we were surprised when the lady told us "they have been processing them really fast so expect them in 2 weeks." I thought she was crazy, but they came the day before the 2-week-mark. Anyway, perhaps you could stop in to a passport place and ask what the wait time might be. You could also pay to get it expedited. ETA- Oopsy... shame on me... didn't see someone else posted about the passport thing before.

My suggestion is Napa Valley. Carmel and Monterey Bay are also beautiful and romantic areas of California.

Love Key West, Charleston, Savannah is suppose to be beautiful, Ashville NC is romantic...what state are you in? That may help narrow it down.

florida's great, but i have to hype up savannah because i got engaged there, it's on the beach but not as rowdy as say, panama city or destin, there's killer shopping in hilton head, which is really close by, and the sightseeing is tons of fun. added bonus if you read midnight in the garden of good and evil first (or see the movie). the pic below is of me in orleans square right before my FI proposed. in some ways it's like a mini-new orleans, lots of little music venues there that are fun, tons of restaurants, and just a neat little city with a ton of things to get into!

I love Nappa and there are some lovely spots in Cape Cod or Nantucket. I also like the Chesapeake for a short getaway.

The first think I thought of was New Orleans too. Neat place. There is this most awesome underwater aquarium there. Also what about Galveston? I know its not the pretty blue waters but I grew up in Texas and have been there many times, lots of neat things to do there.

I live in Ft Lauderdale, Florida so personally my first choice would be somewhere not at all beachy (like hiking in the Carolinas). But if you are looking for beachy I would suggest Sanibel Island, Florida. It's really laid back and beautiful. They encourage people not to drive so everyone rides bikes around the island. It's not terrible expensive but on the upscale side. We have been to the Sanibel Inn and they have beautiful rooms with wood floors and real quilts, free bikes, a poolside bar and it is on the beach. If you are looking to save a little money I think that Ft Myer's Beach is relaxing and fun. I would go to Key West if I was going to go the the Keys. It's got the most culture and it's just alot of fun. The actual beaches in the Keys are not like Florida beaches. They are naturally rocky or mangroves. The white sandy beaches are man made down there.

Key West would be great; it's even before the official start of 'hurricane season'. But, maybe close enough to get some better rates? Hmmm..... Lots of good places in FL I would think. I'm personally not into the whole Disney thing, but some people love Orlando, and they have tons of great hotels. (SF, New Orleans, Orlando, Vegas are the top business conference locations because of sheer number of attractions and hotel rooms.) Myrtle Beach? Outer bank islands off the Carolina's? Cape Cod or Nantucket? Galveston and South Padre, TX? The Cloister, Sea Island, GA? Savannah, GA? All of those would satisfy the beachy honeymoon with lots of stuff to do besides; especially in the South. Romantic surroundings, great food, southern hospitality, world-renowned hotels . . . sounds like an ideal honeymoon!

Winston - tripadvisor just released their "Top Destinations of 2008" list - there is a top 25 for the US on there! http://www.tripadvisor.com/pdfs/tca/TCDestinationsAwards2008.pdf I really trust tripadvisor since so much of their information is based on traveller recommendations. Take a look - you could even combine some of the close ones together (e.g. Big Sur/Napa/San Francisco) if you don't mind driving....

What about a cruise? You still only need a birth ceritificate and ID to go on the Mexico ones. We've done the 7 night one as well as the 5 day ones to Mexico that leave out of CA. Lots to do on the boat, and beaches at the ports. It's also fairly enexpensive.

Thanks everyone! We are in Wisconsin so thus the desire for "beachy"!! I've been to many places in the US though, which is part of the problem....I feel it will be less exciting if I've already been there. Charleston and Savannah? That's a good possibility. What's there to see? Been to San Fran and San Diego although I've heard driving along the coast is nice. Is there enough activity in Key West? I didn't get the impression it had that much going on but I haven't been there for a long time. Is it just the Mexican cruises you do not need a passport for? Thanks for all the ideas. I'm starting to feel a little better now. If Mimzy is reading this.....I told FI to "just take care of the honeymoon yourself" and look who's doing the planning now on short notice.

Charleston is fantastic. So much history and the nightlife is fun. Always a band to see at Music Farm or sometimes there are buskers on the street. It is very nice to just walk everywhere (in Historic Charleston). Not a big fan of the touristy things, but when you are out walking you can find little hidden coves and graveyards. It's really cool. Saturday mornings in the park they have like a farmer's market thing with fresh crepes and music. I could seriously go on for a long while about it.

I'm not sure about the other cruises, I know there's a bunch that leave from Texas and Florida that do the Carribean, the cruise line websites should have details.
