wen104 Cut Rock Total Posts: 333 Last Post: 7/22/2008 Member Since: 9/12/2007	Ok I got bored so at lunch I went to a local B & M non chain store to talk to the jeweler about resetting a diamond I have sitting away at home. Anyways we got talking about stones and he said:HE DOESN'T LIKE IDEAL CUT DIAMONDS AHHHHH What! He said that he would rather sell a very good diamond with a larger spread to his cutomers and that there is to much hype about ideal cut diamonds when a very diamond is just as beautiful. So I couldn't say anything I was like hmmm well what do you think about the grading labs. He said well GIA is the best and much more consistant and AGS 000 are usually graded by great cut but debateable on eveyrthing else. WHAT I won't mention name but my diamond won't be reset there!

kcgunesq Cut Rock Total Posts: 103 Last Post: 12/27/2008 Member Since: 4/2/2008	Maybe what he really means is "I don't like carrying Ideal cut stones in my inventory because the average shopper in my store will almost always reject that stone in favor of one that's bigger for the same dollar, and thus I get to sit on thousands of dollars in very nice inventory that I can't move". In other words, perhaps while he can appreciate the extra beauty, he can't appreciate it enough to try to sell them to a market that doesn't want them. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, there doesn't seem to be anything inherently wrong with his position. He's in business to make money, and if "Ideal" stones don't make him as much money as nice, but not ideal stones, that seems like a legitimate niche to fill. Personally, if he does nice bench work, I don't know that I'd let this difference in "opinion" keep you from using him for a reset. That said, you probably don't want o buy any stones from him either, unless you are willing to do your own analysis.

Fly Girl Ideal Rock Total Posts: 3,769 Last Post: 11/24/2009 Member Since: 1/9/2007	It was about 8 years ago now (long before PS), but I picked a well cut diamond over an ideal cut. I remember the jeweler holding the ideal cut under a spot light and there was a black background. The diamond disappeared and shot a lasar-like red bolt of light into my eye. I thought that diamonds were supposed to be white, and not be invisible lasar guns. So, my well cut stone, as well as being somewhat less expensive, doesn't do that disappearing act. It has a great spread, nice sparkle (even from the side ), and is whiter under more lighting situations. Biggest drawback is I have to keep it very, very clean, or it looks like meh much more quickly than an ideal cut would. After discovering PS, I would probably pick an ideal cut this time around. I have looked at them in person and they do have more sparkle, but I still rather like the personality of my stone. I considered trading up to an ideal cut, but decided that paying many $$$ just so my diamond would look a whole lot better when it was dirty, was not worth it to me. 60/60 cut diamonds don't get much respect on PS, but jewelers I have spoken with seem to love them. As far as resetting your diamond, that depends on whether they have good setters more than whether that particular jeweler likes ideal cut stones or not. **** Life is a Journey, not a Destination. ****
