Hi all-

Another newbie coming out of lurkerdom! After lurking for months and learning soooooo much, we are getting ready to get going on my e-ring upgrade.  I have several diamond possibilities (mainly at GOG and WF) in the 1.35-1.5 range. I have not contacted anyone because I wanted to have the setting decided - that has become the problem. After many, many more hours (days, weeks) of surfing online for ideas and trips to several B&M stores such as Jareds, Robbins Bros., Helzberg, many mall offerings and even a few mom & pop jewelers I think I have decided on an A Jaffe setting.  There is not a ton of info on this designer here - but I've read the posts there are.  I can't seem to find the setting anywhere online (it was at a Robbins Bros. store.)  I checked the A Jaffe website, Pearlman's, Soloman Brothers, Michael Fina and anywhere else that came up - no luck.

Since I believe I want to purchase a diamond online, I'm not sure what to do.  I don't feel entirely comfortable bringing my own diamond to Robbins Bros. to have it set - they seemed to frown on it and kept telling me they have no responsibility if something happens while they are setting it. And when we agreed to look at some of their diamonds (after I shared the info on the diamonds we are looking at online) they said they needed to check the inventory and would get back to us - they haven't and didn't return my DH phone calls.

Although I feel like I learned so much here - I'm afraid I'm going to end up going to a B&M option because I feel like I don't know what I'm doing.

This is the setting (hopefully it attaches - this is tricky!)

I would suggest contacting Pearlman's, and ask them if they can get it for you. Then check with GOG and WF to see if they'll accept and set your diamond in it. GOG will set almost anything I'm pretty sure, not so sure about WF. You will have to pay a setting fee though, just a heads up!

From what I read here Pearlman, GOD and WF are all very helpful...

Did you try contacting A Jaffe directly? Maybe they'll be able to help if you email or call them.

I have also contacted Robbins Bros., MC Fina, Solomon Brothers for some Verragio rings. They seemed to be pretty nice with the whole shopping/thousand questions deal...

Pearlman's can get in any setting that any of their designers they carry. Just call them and you can send them a pic and the'll locate it for you. They will probably suggest sending your stone to them b/c they recommend the designer do the setting. they even cover the stone while it's being set. they also carry ideal cut stones so although they don't post all the diamond info on their site yet, you can purchase a stone from them as well and many times pricing will be better if you get the whole deal from the same place. Pricescope vendors work together often though so whatever you decide they will gladly work with you.

Hi Poprocks-

Are you sure Soloman doesn't have it? It looks very similar to the first one on the second row from the bottom, no? Maybe it's not and my eyes are playing tricks on me...

ETA - NEVERMIND, it isn't the same. Just ignore me! SORRY!
It's a beautiful setting, best of luck on your search!

This one? (just without the euro shank?) It's from their website.
I know that Fortunoff also carries A. Jaffe, maybe try contacting them.
Good Luck.

Thanks for all the responses!  Of course, as soon as I decided to post, my computer wacked out - so I'm at the library getting my pricescope fix!!  Anyway - from what I can see, none of the pictures are quite the same setting.  It does have a euro shank, and there are five channel set diamonds on each side (with space around and under them that really make them stand out) and the prongs are a double prong with a twist in them. There is a tiny surprise diamond on the sides.  We actually just went to another jeweler today beacuse I thought I found the setting on their website - and it was it!  It is the only one they have  - and it is a killer deal (about $1700 less than at Robbins Bros.)  We reserved it to make sure it doen't get sold, but I still need to figure out what to do about the center stone.  They of course showed me some that would work - and I have to say all these stones look pretty in the store (in the setting) but then I asked to see it under the scope and I was appalled.  They say they specialize in superior cut stones, but then showed me a SI2 - J - 1.5ct for $11,997 and it had a huge feather right in the middle and lots of other "stuff" throughout.

My husband has been sold on all my research and pricescope education and he definitely agrees it is the way to go.  It worries me a bit that I don't have a good enough eye without a scope to make a good decision - although I have to say the stone I have bookmarked are far superior as far as I can tell. The jeweler said sometimes you can get a good deal because it is a "sleepy diamond" - what in the world is that?  She said it had to do with the rough diamond before it is cut and can make a big difference in the overall brilliance, etc.

I know they have good return policies at GOG & WF (where I am considering purchasing) - is it common to have to have several sent to decide or does all the great information they provide really make the difference?

Glad you found the setting you want. Could you purchase it, then when you find the stone you want from GOG or wherever, send it there to be set?

I have no idea on the quality of stone you're looking at locally, but you are going to see something under magnification with an SI2. I have one... it's eyeclean, but under the loupe I can see the tiny inclusions.

I got my stone from GOG. I did not have any others sent to me in order to make a decision. I just went with the information given and GOG/Jon's reputation; I could not have been happier. I just knew this diamond was "the one." If you're debating between a few and can't decide, I would really try to rule out as much as I can then have a couple sent for the final decision. Many here have had diamonds shipped to them and they've not gone with that particular stone. Whatever works to get "the" diamond.

You do not have to be concerned about the quality of diamonds you get from GOG or WF.  In fact, theirs were hands down better quality than ANY I looked at locally. The cut will be superior and you just have to decide on the color and clarity you are comfortable with.  I am sure many people have sent diamonds to Pearlman's to have set, and Pearlman's can call in AGS0 stones as well.

~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~
