Wow, I didn't know anyone here was from AK. DH and I had an AK cruise in the plans but decided to cancel it because we'd be happier actually GOING to and STAYING in AK, not just on a boat. So, could you share some thoughts on where to go and what to do?

So far, we're really interested in Ketchikan. We don't need to be around any nightlife or big cities. We want to go to see the wildlife and glaciers, and kayak, explore, etc.

TIA!

I am glad to hear that you are coming North!  Ketchikan is great and I am sure you will love it.  May I ask how long your stay will be?  Alaska is huge!  A great deal larger than most people realize While Ketchikan is very much the Pacific Northwest, most of Alaska is further North with varying climates and terrains.  Please tell me more about your plans!

Colored Gemstone Nut is from Sitka.  His thread has some terrific pictures if you want to take a peek.

Hi!

OMG! CGN's pics...that's where I want to go! AMAZING!!!

DH and I had only planned on a 5 day cruise originally, but we realized that wouldn't give us near enough land-time. That's when we decided to just GO to AK. We're trying to gather info on where we should go and at what time of year. I think we'd need at least 10 days to do it right, what do you think?? Also, it would depend on the budget, which isn't set yet. SO, for now, what are the "top" places to see or do in AK? (We want to boat, fish, dog-sled?, hike, see mountains and glaciers (Denali). I would also love to see the Northern Lights, maybe pan for gold, all those once-in-a-midwesterners-lifetime things)

Oh, and thanks for the link!

Beautiful pictures! I will actually be in Alaska for 10 weeks for business -- I leave mid-May. I'll be in Achorage, and I'm excited because I've never been to Alaska.

Denali is a amazing but I would recommend spending time in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.  You could go rafting, hiking, camping, and have gorgeous views.  It doesn't really get dark in the summer months so there is no real chance of seeing the Northern Lights.  I would also recommend the Kenai Peninsula.  It is packed with tourists but worth it.  You could rent a car in Anchorage and drive the scenic Seward Highway to Seward, Kenai, or Homer.  All would be great for fishing and Seward has a wonderful Fourth of July celebration.   I would just look at a map of Alaska and Google different areas.

Lindsey,  I am glad you are excited to spend ten weeks in Alaska.  Just make a point of getting out of Anchorage once in awhile
