Should I go with Martin Flyer or Scott Kay? |

Hi everyone, Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone on this forum for teaching me all about diamonds and settings. Before I came here, I was pretty clueless, and this site has helped me TREMENDOUSLY in figuring out what stone and setting to get. And now one final question: I saw a beautiful simple pave platinum wedding set from Scott Kay, and love the look of it. But the fiance and I stopped at another store, and they had an almost identical Martin Flyer set. My question to you all -> With all things being equal, which would you buy, and why? I've barely heard of anyone going with Martin Flyer, so I haven't really been able to gauge other people's opinions of them. Thanks again!!! M |

Can you post pictures? I am sure there would probably be differences in the heads at least, so I don't think anyone could really give an opinion unless they can see them both. Both brands are probably fine.

Here's a link to the Scott Kay one: http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-designers/scott-kay-jewelry/rings/149U1/90/ And yes, I'm going with a .82ct rb center stone. For the life of me, I can't find the Martin Flyer one like this. The Martin Flyer is veeeeery similar to this, but the diamonds are a smidge bigger, and doesn't have the little 'secret'diamonds on the side of the head. If I can find the MF, I'll post that one too. Thanks! ![]()

I love that set and even considered it myself. But what I am not sure about is if the price is really for both rings or just one. Have you asked Pearlman's? The price is good if it is for both.

No, sadly - that's only for the engagement ring.

I am by no means an expert, but I have looked up close at the Martin Flyer line. My former jeweler was an authorized dealer for MF. Me personally, I like the Scott Kay better. The Flyer to me looks too "matched", almost looks processed, if that makes sense. The craftsmanship on both is wonderful, and I haven't seen the scott kay in person, but I like the pics of the SK better than the MF I have seen in person. Just my 2 cents worth. I am sure you will love whatever you choose.

I like Martin Flyer's collection. I don't own any myself, but I've tried many of his pieces on at Fortunoff. Beautiful craftsmanship. I got a bad taste in my mouth about Scott Kay when my girlfriend gave her son her engagement ring stone for his intended and they plunked down $2500 for a plain platinum SK mounting. (Platinum was only trading for $700/$800 back then) Way over priced.

Honestly, I think the Martin Flyer is more expensive than the Scott Kay. I need to re-confirm SK prices, but I got a surprise when I found out the MF was 2195 for the ER, and 2k for the matching band. I was given cheaper prices for the SK, but for some reason I'm not quite trusting that price. I'm going to call another jeweler and see if they have it and how muc. I think the MF looks mostly like this, but they're all starting to blur. http://www.solomonbrothers.com/Search/JewelrySearchDetails.asp?Submit=Submit&sSKU=99103

I agree - I had a friend who was dead set on Scott Kay, and his setting was double what a replica setting from a PS vendor would have cost. *********************************************** |

Yeah I can see how expensive the SK settings are! I just got pricing on the SK ring I was looking for, from 2 vendors. Apparently the pricing I received last week was incorrect. The Scott Kay engagement ring alone, with .13 tcw - was $2350 in platinum. It's a thin band, folks... LOL Can you believe that??? Now the MF isn't looking as expensive :-) I'll post info on my diamond when I get it set, too. It's a beauty from GOG. I'm so excited!!! Have a great day all! M

missmaia, did you call pearlmans for a quote on the scott kay? I'd definitely give them a shot, their desginer prices are very competitive and if you find the same item priced lower they will pricematch plus knock of an additional 10%. you are paying some for the designer name, but you will have the added bonus of the desinger reputation and quality with is a huge plus for me personally.

Thank you ALLLLLL for your opinions and help!!! We just came back from the jeweler. I was going to go with the Martin Flyer solitaire with pave sidestones - and I changed my mind. I think I'm just not a solitaire girl, and at my fiance's prompting, I went with the 3-stone with pave that I just kept going back to. Oh my gosh it was more expensive, but he said it was a drop in the bucket in the overall scheme of things. He wanted me to get whatever I wanted to get. So, we just put down a deposit on this: http://www.solomonbrothers.com/Search/JewelrySearchDetails.asp?sSKU=94431-1 I'm SO excited and nervous at the same time, as right now it seems like a lot of money to wear on my finger, but I know I'll get over that pretty quickly :) I'm sure I'm not the only one who's nervous over this sort of thing - it's almost like a 'high' after you've just spent a ridiculous amount of money on something. It's all relative -> this may seem like a paltry sum to many, but it's a lot for me, since I'm a bit frugal. I feel like I've just bet the farm or something. I'll post pictures and specs when I get it all back in a couple of weeks and get the 'real' proposal... Have a great weekend everyone!! M
