I'm glad this forum is somewhat anonymous! I would like to know why engagement rings are not generally made in titanium? I like the idea of having a titanium engagement ring as it is hypoallergenic, a stronger and lighter weight metal than platinum, but I have not seen anything close to a style that I'd like to get it in. From what I've seen, they mostly come in men's wedding bands, tension sets, or simple bands with a different head to hold the diamond ring in, such as white gold or platinum. I like the thought of a ring completely made of Titanium, prongs/claws included, but with the high quality craftsmanship/fine details, micropave bands etc, similar to what you could find through vendors such as LM, HW, etc etc. Is that possible and does anyone do it? Why isn't it done?

I don't think titanium can be manipulated the way platinum and gold can. It can't really be made into prongs easily, which is why you only see tension set titanium pieces and simple bands. You can't cut and solder it like you can platinum and gold.

That's a shame. I want something really durable but delicate looking, beautiful, and well crafted. Ok, back to .

Date: 3/30/2008 5:21:38 PM I believe Memorie has a particular platinum line (can't recall the name) that is a different "mix" of platinum, and IIRC is more durable?Author: ~*kalypso*~ That's a shame. I want something really durable but delicate looking, beautiful, and well crafted. Ok, back to . I also believe that if platinum is handcrafted (i.e. not cast) it is more durable. You could check out Maytal Hannah or Leon Mege. If you go to higher end designers, you shouldn't have as many issues as if you went with a budget option. Michael B, Daniel K, Ritani... I think these have good reputations for durability. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

I have heard, although not sure if it's true, that if you need to get your rings off in an emergency. ie. in the emergency room at hospital after an accident etc etc, titanium is so strong, many hospitals don't have the equipment to have it cut off in an emergency. Of course, this could be just more b.s that I keep in my head for future use, but it could be true! Maybe worth looking into. If it's true, this may never be a problem, but I wouldn't like to think what would happen if this was the case. Wedding Date Take 2: 26th November 2009! |

Hi Sera: I'll look up "memorie" brand or IIRC? or have the BF look it up thanks. Yes, my concern is with durability and diamonds popping out of platinum, obviously the center stone would be the worst and if I lost that I would just buy a new ring or not bother with a second one at all, but what bothers me is losing a diamond in the pave. The idea of it bothers me a lot. I've read here a few times one little diamond popping out or getting loose here and there even on well crafted rings, and I know there is no 100% guarantee that a diamond won't fall out, but I still get very 'blahhhhed' out by that when I read it. I would be very irritated with that, but unfortunately the ring styles I've really liked at the top of my list thus far have delicate looking pave. honey22: Thanks for the input! I did a 4 week elective rotation in the trauma department in a level 1 Trauma hospital, but I had never encountered that or heard of there being a problem while I was there. Rings were already removed by the time the patient reached me. I never bothered to ask now that I think of it regarding different types of metal rings. I'll have to ask a few colleagues in different ERs and OB departments one day whether what you've heard is true or not and if it is a problem. Although I suspect it's not true, I wouldn't make a blanket statement and say what you've heard is not true across the board since I do not know for sure, so I will definitely keep that in mind!!!... But since there are no ring craftsmen making the style of ring that I want or like in Titanium right now that I can see, I guess it's not really an option for me anyway. I hope a very talented and artistic craftsman with good equipment makes it an option one day... and fairly soon! ![]() Ok, no more thinking or talking of rings for me right now, it's taking up too much of my time! Arghh! ![]() Thanks for all the info.

I think it's unlikely that anyone will do something soon. Titanium is not an easy metal to work with - it has to be soldered in an inert atmosphere such as argon or helium as if it comes into oxygen it can become brittle. It is also extremely hard which will make it almost impossible to make prongs or similar with. It's also extremely costly to manufacture.
