Hi all! We just purchased a diamond from GOG and were wondering if we should get an independent appraisal of the stone? I know that GOG has a strong reputation and I'm positive that they give an accurate portrayal of the diamond with the megascope, gemex, idealscope and the AGS certificate. Which is why I'm wondering if I should still arrange to send it off to an independent appraiser. Please let me know your thoughts! Thanks!

Well the appraisal is up to you. Most people get an appraisal to verify the diamond matches the cert and for insurance purposes. This thread should help you http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=10662 Congrats on your new diamond

Hi Skippy, Thank you! I'm still so nerve wracked about the whole thing even though we had a lot of info from GOG. Thank you for the link it's helped. I believe maybe after mounting it I'll get it appraised since its not a bezel setting. This option might be a more cost effective choice for us since GOG runs such a battery of tests and has such a good rep. It would really just be for insurance purposes. Anyone know of a competent ind. appraiser in NYC or Long Island? Thanks!

Some who buy from vendors with an excellent rep like GOG don't worry about getting an independant appraisal, but it depends on what is best for you. Here is a link where you should be able to find an appraiser near you. http://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.aspx ![]() Nothing is more sacred as the bond between horse and rider...no other creature can ever become so emotionally close to a human as a horse. Hi Lorelei, I was thinking along the same lines of not even having it appraised since GOG is so reputable, but I am worried that I would be cheating myself for missing the 30 day return policy if *something* should come up. Erring on the side of caution is probably my motto when it comes to big purchases. Do you know of any PSers that bought at GOG and DID NOT have it appraised and felt OK with it? I have twinning wisps in my diamond and I was just concerned that I'd need to have that checked out in case my girdle chipped or got cracked. I checked that link and found a few I liked. However, I wanted to know if anyone has real life experience with any NYC or Long Island appraisers. I hate walking into to meet someone blind--which is why I was so happy to purchase at GOG. Thanks, Lily

Thanks, Lily I think there may have been one or two if my memory serves me correctly, that may not have had an appraisal after a GOG purchase, as they felt it was unecessary for them. Maybe they will see this query and chime in. But it is up to your own comfort level if you would rather do so, if you feel that it would be prudent on such a big purchase, then it may add to your overall sense of ' job well and thoroughly done - money well spent' so to speak! ![]() Nothing is more sacred as the bond between horse and rider...no other creature can ever become so emotionally close to a human as a horse. Its funny to come across this post now, I have been concerned about my ins. coverage every since I had my stone remounted. Heres why: when the stone was purchased, years ago, in a retail store (like a mall) the center stone was graded G si2 2.01. My problem is when it was redone, it was reappraised. The people that did the work said they r all GIA trained. They graded very strick (I think), but reguardless, I feel they gave what they think is a GIA grade, and it most likely is closer, but I don't get the Gia cert. that goes along with such tough grading. They went from the G si2 to a I I1. So now if something happens to this ring, the ins company will shop a I i1, not a GIA cert I i1. Who knows what I will end up with. Am I making any sense? Would this concern u, what do I need to do?

I purchased my diamond from WF. They are also a respected vendor. I had an independent appraisal of the stone. I would do the same for a diamond from GOG. I did this for my peace of mind. For the amount of money involved in purchasing a diamond compared to the amount for an appraisal, it seems like a reasonable course of action to me. I also wanted to know the retail value of the diamond, should I choose to have a non-internet transaction with this diamond.
