The ivory shirt post made me think of this but I didn't want to threadjack.

A bit of background - fiance isn't exactly a fashionista. He's the type of guy who will wear things until they wear out, then go out and buy the exact same thing. He knows exactly nothing about formalwear, but did have some notions of what he'd like to wear for the wedding. A black tuxedo, with his black Rockports, and a royal blue bowtie and vest.
[Note: our bridesmaids are wearing olive green, and our wedding colors are olive/celery/and a bright chinese red - there is no blue anywhere]

Now, I love him more than anything, but it just seemed like he needed a little assistance. I "suggested" getting a new pair of shoes, and wearing an ivory bowtie and cummberbund (he's very much set on the bowtie idea). He's not particularly keen on this idea, and I suspect even less keen on the fact that he is getting "no say" in the outfit he wears at his wedding.

So here's the thing - I found a nice navy blue silk bowtie (self-tie, not pretied) with a matching cummberbund online. I know this won't match our colors, but heck, we don't worry about matching each other in real life. But I also don't want people to go around wondering why the groom is wearing a navy tie.

Is this going to look horribly weird? And if so, will people talk?

Please take this with a grain of salt, because it was a high school kid...but one of Robbie's dates to a Prom wore a cumberbund instead of a vest (which is what most of the boys wore, if I recall), and the cumberbund was black and his shirt was white, and ALL I see when I look at those pics are his white shirt peeking out from under his cumberbund! I don't know enough about these things to know if he just had it on wrong or it didn't fit right, or was just cheap from a rental place, but I would suggest getting a cumberbund in the same color as the shirt in case this happens to other people!

As for a blue tie, I don't think it will look that out of place. Your FI doesn't have to look the same as the wedding party, and if he has his heart set on blue, then he should get blue!

I think he could wear blue... I don't know anything about your wedding style/formality but what about one of these...?

I think they are super cute but obviously don't work for everyone!

As long as you put a cumberbund on right, it looks fine. My dad is a musician and wears a tux fairly often (white shirt with black cumberbund) and I've never seen it look odd.

As far as the color issue, I think blue is fine. Could you maybe tie it in to the colors somewhere else? Like perhaps throw in the same color blue he uses for the tux as an accent color in the centerpieces or something. Or you could add some splashes of it into your boquet (or for your "something blue").

i think you should let him go ahead and wear what he wants to wear. i don't think it is worth sacrificing your future husband's happiness for the sake of color coordination.

worst case scenario you have a cute story to tell years from now about how he insisted on wearing blue despite it not matching. who knows, he might realize it might look silly all on his own when he sees the color of other things and volunteer to change it up.

or you could just tell people that HE is your something blue!
