Best lighting environment for proposal? Natural daylight? Flourescent light? |

So I guess this post has more to do with the diamond itself than proposals, but I'm wondering what lighting conditions would be IDEAL for presenting a diamond to someone I'm going to propose to. Would natural daylight be the best? What about somewhere indoor with a lot of spot lighting above? What about night-time under flourescent lights? I'm trying to narrow down my options and choose a location that would allow the diamond to SPARKLE light crazy. BTW, I finally ended up getting a diamond. Can't post pics right now because I'm at work, but will post them as soon as I can. I'm very happy with the diamond, and thanks to all the input on the forums. I didn't end up getting a diamond online, but I felt the info provided on PS and the forums allowed me to make a really educated decision on specific loose diamonds I was looking at. Anyway... any suggestions on lighting?

Congratulations! :) ![]() My own favourite lighting conditions for maximum dazzle would be under halogen spotlights (such as in my bathroom, jewellery shops & some restaurants) and probably sunlight - although this does make the diamond appear dark, in a weird visual trick as your eyes compensate for all the bright flashes of fire. Candlelight is always lovely (and flattering!) and I love my diamond in just plain boring, daytime indoor light too. Not really any fire then, but that's when I see the amazing white light return and my diamond looks liks a big white lightbulb glowing on my finger. :) I wouldn't worry tooooo much about the lighting. Your proposal and the ring will most likely blow your girl away wherever you do it... and she'll have a whole lifetime to play with it under different lighting! I would say that fluorescent is perhaps my least favourite.. but again, these are just my own opinions! Good luck and enjoy your special moment! x x x

I ditto cleo. Halogen spotlights are perfect for showing off a diamond. Maybe thats why I spend so much time in my kitchen.....but never get the cooking done! Congrats on the diamond purchase and the upcoming proposal. Trust me--when she realizes what yo are doing and sees that ring in front of her, the lighting won't matter at all. She'll be too excited to care!! Let us know how you propose.

I vote for candlelight. While lighting is important, make sure it has a romantic setting. Somehow the idea of a kitchen (while lovely on the sparkle) is not the ideal location for a proposal or flourescent lighting . Obviously you're a detailed sort of guy if you're thinking about lighting, how about a trial run by taking the ring with you to different locations?

I agree with heraanderson. Pick out a lovely restauant (when it's not busy) and go there by yourself beforehand. Sit in several areas with the ring until you find the desired lighting, and reserve that spot for your proposal. The lighting in Las Vegas is fantastic, as well. Or, if she is a Home Depot girl, take her there! That is my favorite place to look at my ring sparkle like crazy!!! lol Congrats on finding your ring and your upcoming proposal. Best Wishes. Venice |

My ring looks best at Baja Fresh but please don't propose to her there! Ha!

You know your a PSer when... Venice, you may have only 38 posts. You are are a TRUE PSer at heart. I have agree with Cleo that is just won't really matter. She's going to be THRILLED at the proposal. And just so you know... will be STARING at it in EVERYSINGLE lighting condition after its on her finger anyway... so she'll figure it out with you. And tell you, if she's anything like me..."OMG honey... look at it now." Five minutes later..."Oooh... look at the colors! Oh honey... LOOK it's fire.... oh honey it's got the coolest X." Congrats!

Haha! I was just about to say Home Depot but you beat me to it, Venice! I have noticed similar effects in WalMart as well! But I think a nice restaurant might be more memorable for a proposal..but maybe not?

England might be a bit too far to travel, but I LOVE the way my ring sparkles in the restaurant at Sandringham (which is where the Queen lives in the summer)! The ceiling is set with hundreds and hundreds of spotlights. I could be eating sandcastles, and I probably wouldn't notice as I'm always just staring at the fire coming off my ring and hoping no-one spots me! :) Threadjack apart, choose your location to be somewhere romantic or special to you.. rather than for the lighting. Gypsy is right: she's going to be staring at her new ring for MONTHS!!! :) x x x

Gypsy, thank you for the kind PS welcome! Before PS, I thought that I was the only one who had a diamond obsession and knew that the cut was most important! Twenty three years later I find that I am not alone.... DH and I went to Papa Vino's for dinner last night and the lighting was AMAZING! I usually try to stare at my ring discreetly so that no one will know, but last night I just did not CARE!!! Venice |

Date: 3/29/2008 6:18:36 PM Lol, I was going to suggest Home Depot, but I think that candlelight is much more romantic, and it really makes a diamond sparkle!

LMAO at Home Depot!! I have a list of places where my ring looks awesome-- Lowes, the depot, Chipotle, sushi bar, and I LOOOOOVE the lighting in Applebees. I thought I was the only one who did these crazy things!! ![]() Sorry to threadjack here. So what did you pick porkibear for the proposal? Doing candlelight? I am excited to hear your decision.
