Hey everyone I am getting an 18K gold solitaire for my new diamond (yippee), the legato sleek line solitaire, and I want to get a new wedding band to wear with it too. I have a little 1.8 mm gold band now but I have always wanted a really nice thicker wedding band that I never take off (my original w-band was a half-eternity diamond band that I wear as a RHR right now). Can I mix 14K next to 18K or should I get 18K for my new wedding band too? What's the difference in how the tw otypes of gold look and wear? DD *** Dreamer *** |

Don't do this! My mother has an 18k e-ring, and when they took her w-band in to have it resized 10 years after their marriage the jeweller swapped it for a 14k band. My father was extremely ill at this time (caught Hepatitis B operating on a patient) and so my mother didn't know to check the hallmark. When she discovered that her e-ring was starting to disappear, my father checked the bands and discovered that the hallmark in her wedding band was a date letter for 3 years after their marriage and that the band was only 14k. It was too late to do anything as this was several years later. My mother is now doubly devastated - the ring she was married with is no longer there, and she had to have her e-ring totally rebuilt as so much gold had rubbed away (and it was a very complicated setting). She has lost so much sentimental value from both rings.

Hi ! I don't think it's a good idea. The higher the gold content the softer it is. So it will mean that when you put the two bands together, the 14K will "eat away" the 18 K. This happened to me where I had a 22K gold (an old heirloom) put next to an 18K. I hope that helps. =)

Thanks, I will stick with 18K for sure! How fast does this "eating" process begin?? I have a little 1.8mm wedding band I could wear for a while until I can afford to buy a new wedding band, but if it's going to damage my new setting in a short period of time (a couple months) then I will just *HAVE* to buy a new wedding band right away! How aweful!! ![]() DD *** Dreamer *** |
