G colored stones... good value?

lovehersomuch Cut Rock Total Posts: 315 Last Post: 6/10/2009 Member Since: 6/20/2007	what do you all think about G colored stones? i was going to go with F (colorless) at the minimum but since i want to get a bit bigger ct size i and am getting a diamond iwth an excellent/ideal cut i thought it wouldnt make a difference if it is indeed G colored. i read that if the diamond has a superior cut then even if it is near colorless it will still "pop" and have a colorless look. is that right?

I would say you're completely safe with G colour. Pretty much so unless the diamond is huge. Also especially if GIA or AGS graded, a G is a sweet spot for many! Have you seen a G stone in person? I suggest you go into a local B&M and compare ideal cut G's to F's etc. I'm ver color sensitive, so personally I wouldn't go less than F... but thats just me... Its a personal preference, the best thing you can do is look at stones in person and figure out what you want

I love them -- both are ideal cut stones (one WF A Cut Above, one James Allen ideal w/ H&A pattern), and they are brilliant sparklers. But I am color sensitive and do notice a bit of color in them. But I think they were very good values, and the color doesn't bother me very much right now. I may eventually trade up to Es though.... It really depends if you like the very white look of the colorless stones, or don't mind a bit of "warmth" in your stones. If you don't mind warmth, you can get incredible deals in the G-I, even J range...

Bottom up, "I" couldn't tell either so I decided a G was safe. What clarity are you talking about? If I had the choice between an F SI or a G VS, I'd go for the G. Your best bet though is to go look like others have said. elle

sugar Ideal Rock Total Posts: 693 Last Post: 11/5/2009 Member Since: 6/11/2007	G colored stones are indeed a good value! it's definitely a personal preference thing though and also psychological so it depends on what you're comfortable/satisfied with. i'm very color sensitive and love icy white stones. definitely go check them out in person to see what your eyes like.

I bought him an H for his FI's e-ring. The cut is amazing and it faces up whiter than I would have believed. It's also a question of preference - I like the warm colours personally.

I'll even go further as to say that G,H,I are all good values that can not be noticed by most people when set in a setting. You add the fact that day to day actives like washing dishes will add more gunk to a stone than any slight yellow ting will. Like anything. Its always best to check for yourself in person. Of course side by side will be the easiest test to make a G,H,I look not so colorless. I reality that sort of taste test almost never happens.

I just got my engagement ring from the Diamond Broker in Los Altos (here in the Bay Area) and I had the same thoughts, should I get a F, G, or H.. I personally could tell the difference between a F - G - H (F - H is a very noticeable difference) when they're next to each other. F to G was noticable but only if you put it next to each other... and I had a hard time telling the colors apart when they're not together, I doubt most people will notice, especially when it's mounted. When I was looking at the diamonds, I actually saw a few amazing VS2-H's, SI1-H's that out sparkled some VS1-F and VS1-E stones. The cut is what determines how well the diamond will perform. I personally choose an GIA excellent cut F colored stone, but went down a notch in clarity (VS2 from VS1) to maintain my price goal. Sam
