prinzbsr Rough Rock Total Posts: 10 Last Post: 3/16/2008 Member Since: 2/20/2008	Hi all, With the amazing help of Jon at GoG and others here, strmrdr especiallly, I have finally found my wonderful new Asscher. I've found my setting also...it's tremendously unique and therefore I couldn't find it from any retailers here on PS. Of course, that was partially driven by prices on bands well over budget just b/c of the name on it. Anyways...back to the point here. The jeweler I'm purchasing the band from has said that if they do not set the diamond in the band the warranty will be voided on the setting. I'm not sure whether to let them set it to keep the warranty intact, or if I should keep everything close to me here at home and have a local jeweler set it for me. It worries me some to send a diamond across the entire country to be set...How can I guarantee that they set my diamond and don't switch it out? Should I stay local with having it set, or let the jeweler with the band set it? Any thoughts on this? Looking forward to hearing what's out there!

I can offer a suggestion about being sure your diamond isn't "swapped" etc - the obvious one of course is using a reputable jeweller, but if you'd like more security many here advise to study and memorise your stone's inclusion plot under a loupe, so you can check it when it comes back against the cert. You can also ask AGS (and I think GIA ?) to laser inscribe your stone's certificate nbr on the girdle. This is a pretty common and reasonably inexpensive service. Eva17 Ideal Rock Total Posts: 1,005 Last Post: 9/25/2009 Member Since: 7/14/2006	there is an active thread about this very problem. the vendor will not service the setting free of charge since the stone was set by someone else... but, aside from being able to identify your own diamond, which is your partial protection against stone swapping, what about who is responsible for the diamond? if you send your diamond to be set by the vendor with the setting, who is insuring the diamond against chipping, etc? Are you responsible for having the stone insured with your own policy?

mrssalvo Ideal Rock Total Posts: 16,856 Last Post: 11/20/2009 Member Since: 1/3/2005	If it were me this is what I'd do. 1) find out if the designer will take responsibilty for the diamond while it's being set. if they won't, have GOG set it in a cheapo setting, insure the ring (you'll want to verify all of this with your insurance company). then it would be covered by your insurance company if something happened when it was being reset. you can also purchase a policy through Jewelers Mutual that will cover the stone while it's being set. 2) I'd send the stone/temp setting to an independant appraiser, like Rich Sherwood, Dave Atlas, neil or Jeff, let them appraise it and then send it on to the desinger making the setting. when the designer is done, they ship it back to the appraiser who will verify the stone and do a new appraisal to include the setting and then send it back to you. 3) I highly recommmend sending stones, although nervewracking, to the designer for setting if it's a high-end designer. we've seen many designer settings get messed up when the local folks set them. it is very unlikely your diamond would be switched. why would a reputable designer risk their business and possible jail time to swap your stone? ----------------------------- A deal is only a deal if you are getting exactly what you want.

I will add though, JM is an expensive insurance co. If I had whiteflash set my stone in their cheapest setting, then reset it, I could of used my travelers policy and still saved about 500 a year. Just make sure you have insurance before having the stone set, or reset if the you're getting the setting through someone that didn't sell you the stone. elle

The thing is, if the setting is across the country, I don't think you are going to send it there for servicing anyway. But as MrsS said, if it is a designer, it probably should be set by the designer. ~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~

Purchase my stone from GoG and have it shipped directly to me. 2. Send to Rich Sherwood? or keep in local with Jim O'Bryant here in Ohio 3. have the stone sent from Jim or Rich directly to Lussori to be set 4. have the completed ring sent back to Jim or Rich to verify the stone and complete an appraisal for the total ring 5. propose!! I'm a little concerned with the insurance thing. Does it have to be in a setting?? Can I insure a loose stone? I understand insuring everything, and am trying to stay within budget...:/ This is all so frustrating...lol. Everyone's help is sooo appreciated!

I understand insuring everything, and am trying to stay within budget...:/ you'll have to find out from the company you are planning on insuring the ring with. if it's homeowners/renters etc. call and ask them. also, try calling the designer, they may take responsibility while they are setting it, then the insurance you purchase for shipping would cover it in case of a loss. the other option which i mentioned above is using Jewelers Mutual who will insure the stone while it's being set, so no need for the temp. setting thing. you've got a good plan. ----------------------------- A deal is only a deal if you are getting exactly what you want.

It just says that they exclude loose stones that are not going to be set. When exactly do I need to start the insurance policy on the stone? This may be a bit of a dumb question I suppose since I have to have an appraisal to get it insured right? Thank you all soooo much for the help!
