Help!

I am looking into purchasing a square hearts and arrows diamond for my gf (soon to be FI).  She really likes the square cut diamonds and is partially indifferent between a princess cut and square hearts and arrows.  She really does not like the look of brilliant (round cuts).

I personally like the performance of the square hearts and arrows much better compared to a princess cut diamond and I am in search for your help.

My gf would like a solitare ring, with nothing fancy surrounding the stone.  I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on prongs/settings for a square hearts and arrows diamond that would give this diamond a more SQUARE appearance (somewhat masking the rounded corners)?

I know that it might sound really odd, since the rounded corners are part of the appeal for a square hearts and arrows, yet I am stuck in the pickel of making both myself and my gf happy.

Any suggestions?

You said your GF doesn't like the look of a brilliant... do you mean the way the facets are? or she simply doesn't want a round shaped stone? If she doesn't like the type of sparkle of a round brilliant, the H&A is similarly faceted. A princess cut is going to have those smaller pinpoint flashes of light... a different look. The princess and the sq.H&A are alike in that they are both square-ish, but they are very different in how they sparkle- you might want to check her preference on that... look at some GOG videos.

Maybe some triangular prongs that would give a "point" to the corner.

Maybe a heart shaped prong the corners will stick out a little have a look at Mark Morrell's Work :).

I personally love the vatche xprong but I don't think that will make the corners more pointed, it will look somewhat like the Tiffany Lucida.

Have you considered an AGS0 Princess? they are graded for light performance while I have not seen one IRL they are meant to be UBER sparklie and you have your pointy corners then as well :).

Hi Ideal,
I hope I can help as I have excactly the same questions as you at the moment! I would love to accenuate the squareness of the PoH I'm keen on getting with different prongs. From all the pics I've looked at double/split/heart promgs seem to work well.
The other thing I like is something like this pic (I'm not sure what they're called, maybe "ribbon prongs"??) And I think this pic is Michael B.
If you can do a search here on split prongs you should come up with some good options. Also if you're girl likes simple I've become a very big fan of the Vatche royal X prong (see Ellen's ring for a gorgeous example!) I think many ppl would say not to mess with perfection, but I may ask GOG if Vatche can change the prongs a lil - if I find anything out I'll let ya know!
If you want anymore pics for ideas/options just let me know

It may just look simliar, but I also really like the Michael Bondanza prongs and settings for square stones (see Pearlmans).
I won't post pics of split prongs as there's plenty of gorgeous real life rings to look up here

Does she not like rounds at all, or just as the center stone? This one would look absolutely stunning with a square H&A's, although it may not be what she wants.

Other than that, have you tried looking through the ring thread for ideas?

hey ellen, that was the ring I was thinking of, thankyou! I love those prongs - as someone that owns the vatche, what would you think of asking to have the tips of the prongs altered to look like Demelza's? Not the whole length, just the tips (sorry idealring for the threadjack!).
btw ellen I love love ur ring, i look at it all the time and it has influenced me to have the x prong as one of my final choices.

If she does not like rounds brilliants..., maybe she does not like Brilliants (period)???

Maybe she does like step-cuts???

Ha! You're welcome.

On your idea, I would need to see it to say for sure. While I love those prong tips, they really "go" with the rest of the MB head, which has a bit sharper/straighter lines. I'm just not sure if they would "blend" with the curviness of the x-prong, yanno? Wish we had a photo shopper around...

And thank you!

Yeah, I guess you're right..The curviness/flowiness is its appeal..I just wish I could use photoshop full stop! I was recently trying to explain some changes to a setting to Bill and he replied back that he'd need me to photoshop so he could understand - I had to say sorry but no chance, I'm useless at it ! oh well

Thank you for your reply and suggestions!

My gf does not  like the round shape of the brilliant cut diamonds, but she is indifferent to the small more frequent flashes of a princess and the larger/bolder flashes of the square hearts and arrows!

Thanks again for your advice!

Hey arjunajane,

Thank you for providing your suggestions and all the hard work and many hours you have spent looking up different style prongs.

I would love to see all the different combinations and ideas out there as I have looked and searched high and low and I havent really come across anything that I like so far.

My ideal would be to find something similar to a princess v prong setting for a square hearts and arrows diamond, but i am not sure if these types of settings are designed or designable?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks...Thank you to all for so much support and guidance.
