Opinion on petite e-ring width (2.5mm)--too small? Handshots requested. |

I've noticed a trend lately towards thinner e-ring widths (~2.5mm or less). For my e-ring I'm trying to decide between a thinner version vs slightly thicker width (~3mm or more). It makes sense that a smaller width will better show off the center stone, but I'm worried that it might be too "dainty". Plus the reality of life is that hand-size will change, and I don't want a thin ring to look too small years down the line. FYI my e-ring will either be a solitaire setting vs bead-setting on the sides (center stone RB 1.25ct). My gf is petite (ring size 4) so I don't think it matters THAT much, but from some handshots I've seen on my PS search, I kinda like the look of a thicker band... What are your thoughts? Handphotos (with ring size) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

How would hand one's hand size changing affect the width of the ring by making it look to small when one got older? I don't understand this. My personal opinion (I don't know how much it's worth) is that 2.5 is not dainty. I think of 2.0 as dainty. Maybe that's just me.

i wear a 3.5-4 and do not think 2.5 mm is too thin/small at all. my ring is currently being remade so i don't have a picture but the band is only 2mm and i LOVE it. what does your girlfriend want since she's going to be the one wearing it? oh and yes, it is possible for hand size to change, but I wouldn't use that possibilty as a deciding factor on the e-ring width. |

I think 2.0 to 2.5 mm is a very nice size, especially for smaller fingers. I also think it would be a great size for a 1.25 ct. diamond. Remember that a wedding band will add more width, and some people even like wearing another band above the e-ring for a total of 3 rings. I probably would not go over 2.5 or so.

Date: 3/1/2008 9:44:39 AM Author:gastro Handphotos (with ring size) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! If you just want to see a range of widths and ring sizes, peruse the show me the ring folder. That will be more helpful than the limited number of responses and pics you get here. I also agree with Imdanny that 2.5mm isn't particularly "dainty." I would call it slightly on the thinner side of average. I'd think of 5+mm as thick, 3-4mm as average, and 2 and under as "dainty." That is all subjective, though.

Here's my solitaire. 2.0mm finger size 4. Perfect for me. Maybe you should show your girlfriend different photos of ring widths to see what she'd prefer. Some do not like wider bands--I'd make sure. Also, are her fingers long? short? That can make a difference as well. Oh, and think about what type of wedding band she will add to the ring... HTH! ![]() Coati, G.G. |

I like the thinner band. I find it much more comfortable for daily wear especially when it is hot out. In fact, both my solitaires have 2.5mm bands and both are large stones. I wear them [one at a time, LOL!] with my plain 3.5mm wedding band. My ring size is a 4. Also, I am in my mid 50's and have not found that my hands have changed much since my teens. Hope this helps. ============================ |

My e-ring is no more than 2.0mm and my three stone is less than that...around 1.??mm...I used to like thicker shanks, but my tastes have since changed. I think a thinner shank definitely makes the stone appear bigger (at least it does for me), and it is more comfortable for my hands with a wedding band since my hands are smaller (size 5-5.5 finger, not super long). Anything with increased thickness tends to make it uncomfortable to bend my fingers.

If you are wanting to surprise her, that's fine... but I'd suggest going no thicker than 3mm without knowing that that's what she wants. I've noticed that men tend to prefer the thicker styles because they have more of a "presence" on the finger. Many women, on the other hand, look at thicker shanks as "masculine." Which, I suppose, is appropriate--given that it's more commonly men than women who prefer the thicker look. This doesn't apply to everyone of course, because there are certainly plenty of women who prefer a thicker (4mm+) shank, but generally speaking a thinner shank is a safer bet for a surprise e-ring. Just my 2¢

Mine are about 2.5mm thick (both the e-ring and wedding band) http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=78381 My center is a 1.51 and I wear a 3.5-4. I think the size is really perfect (it was default I wound up with it). I wanted the thinnest channel set princess cuts in platinum and this is what I wound up with. It worked out well though because I really feel it is a durable size. I am pretty hard on my jewelry. It's nice in that the small bands make my center stone stand out.

I'm about the same finger size as your gf, and I specifically told the jeweler 2.5-3MM. It's a perfect width for our size. Remember the wedding band. That will add to the overall width too.

Thanks everyone for giving me their perspectives, especially Coatimundi and Sparkles22 for giving me references photos. I was so confused this morning I marched right to the local Tiffany's to do my own "field investigation" (just got back). Checked out their 6-prong solitaire as well as bead-setting e-rings (which I believe is in the 2.5 to 3.0mm range), and you guys are right: it does NOT look too dainty (what was I thinking?). My NEW problem: I like the look of a solitaire, but I have a hunch that my gf might enjoy the extra "bling" of side-bead setting. Having a plain band with a bead setting e-ring seems like a no-no (at least that's what the Tiffany's salesman and some on this forum seem to indicate). But my gosh, a bead setting wedding band + bead setting e-ring looks a little too "blingy" for me. Sorry to stray off my own topic... Another side note: the Tiffany's salesman was pretty nice, and not at all condescending or arrogant. Well actually, maybe it has to do with the fact that I seemed interested and was getting really into it.

Some people like matching wedding rings and some like plain ones. There is no no-no when it comes to that. And another option is a plain solitaire with bead-set or pave diamonds only on the wedding band. All great looks.

I like the look of a plain solitaire, I like the look of a blinged out band, heck...I love it all! You really should have a general idea of what your GF would like, though. When my DH and I started talking engagement, all I told him was that I wanted a pear solitaire...I did not mention size, extra bling...nothing more. I was still very much surprised when he proposed with a plain solitaire pear...even though that is what I said I wanted, he picked it out himself and he planned the proposal.

Diamond*Dana, you're right. Did some subtle digging this weekend with my gf, which confirmed what I already suspected: she likes RB with bead-setting. Good thing this is what I had in mind already. Now it's all on Mark Morrell's hands...
