Hi Guys,
I wonder if you could help me. I am looking at purchasing a Pear shaped diamond to wear as a pendant. I am thinking around the 3cwt mark as I already have a 3.cwt brilliant cut ring and 4.0ctwt brilliant cut earings so wanted something in proportion. My concern is I have no idea how to pick a good cut for a pear. What dimensions should I be looking at to get the most sparkle and best cut. Do you think any other cut would look better as a pendant? I thought another brilliant cut might be too much. I'm also open to the idea of setting it with surround small diamonds. What do you think? I tend to wear my jewellery all the time so it is something I wouldn't take off so its getting the balance between wearable and too flashy.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi satelite,

I think pears make beautiful pendants! If you wanted a diamond halo around it, I'd personally make the diamonds fairly small, since this is a sizable stone, but that would be pretty. If you haven't already, try doing a search on here for pears, thare are several threads, with pictures. Here's the pear thread, but there are others too.

http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=27270

Here's a link to a chart, just select pear. The numbers with fancies are just a guideline, don't get too wrapped up in them, as fancies need to be seen.

Hope this helped, and we'd love to see pictures of the pendant when it's done!

I think the diamonds around it would be a little much for everyday wear. But I love pears for pendants and I would have a small round at the top where it connects to the chain.  I would probably contact Jonathan at Good Old Gold to find the pear for me.

Here is a photo of a pendant Ann had made out of her old pear diamond (her other round pendant is pictured, too):

satelite, I've was doodling around all of our regular vendors' sites, looking for a 2.5 ct. pear for myself, thinking that I'd upgrade my stone (1.51 ct.) for my next big "0" birthday.  (I'm going to NEED something outstanding to get me through THAT birthday).  There's not much available in 1a grade pears in large sizes.  You're going to have to give it some time and keep looking.  Look everyday if you have to.  Just keep looking for one beauty to pop into someone's inventory.  Most of what's listed is way too deep and have tables you can skate on.  Not good.

What color and clarity are you interested in?  Mine is a 1a and it's worth the wait to find just the right one.  I'll help you look if you'd like help.

Hi Ladies,
Thanks for your help. Ellen I had seen the pear thread but had not seen the ideal measurements. That is really helpful. I've done quite a bit of research on brilliants when I got my last diamond but haven't had anything to do with pears. I can just remember comments about avoiding the "bow" in the middle. That is most helpful. Diamondseeker I like the idea of a small diamond at the top. Simple, elegant and timeless. I agree the diamonds around might be a bit over the top. Wouldn't it be nice if you could get a sleeve made like with the diamond studs and add it when you want to dress it up for nights? Now there's an idea. I'm in the process of getting some made at the moment for my earings as two of my friends got the same so I'm out to outsmart them
Gemgirl any help you can offer would be great. I am looking for D-G SI1 preferably nearer the D but open depending on the stone. As I've mentioned I really don't have any idea for right proportions for a pear. I am in no immediate hurry - just starting to look. If anyone has any other great pear pendants I can look at please let me know the link.
THanks a lot

I LUUUURVE pears in halo settings, esp. for pendants.  I would love to see WF set a gorgeous pear in a halo setting for you!  In a setting with those little mickey mouse ears (for lack of a better term) so the pendant doesn't turn.  Yum! Can't wait to see your final decision!

satelite, it's good that you're not in a hurry.  It will take some time to find that size stone.

When I was searching for my pear I was given a couple of tips- look for 60/60 depth/table percentages.  A well cut pear should be in a 1.50 ratio, meaning one and a half times as long as it is wide but for a pendant, you can go a little longer.  It's a matter of taste.  We're looking for at least "very good" cut and "very good" polish and symmetry.   Do you care if it has a culet?  It's up to you.  Do you like flourescence?  Some women do, some don't.  It's better to know everything you'd like from the start.

Let's see what's out there...

$20,040.- James Allen.  I'll just post every decent stone I can find and you choose.  Say no 100 times if you'd like.  You have to love it!  There was GIA report accessible, it has to be requested.  A lot of pear shaped SI1s look like there's a war going on inside the stone.  You'll have to request and see the certificate for whichever ones you're interested in.

I'm not that good at computers but I have posted both my ring and my earings. PO10472 If you do a search for "satelite" under show me the rings both lots should come up. Diamond seeker I just lso love love love the Leon Mege pendant. What a dream. Now that would be tempting.
Thanks also Gemgirl for the heads up on the dimensions that would work. I'm a few months off yet before I purchase but would be pleased to get a feel for what is out there.
Cheers
