I went to a jeweler today with my boyfriend to pick out diamonds and a setting for my engagement ring. I loved the diamonds I saw, but there was one thing that concerned me. Since I have limited experience with diamonds, I was wondering if anyone could offer their advice on my choice. I picked a 1.7 carat round brilliant, ideal cut, I color, SI1 stone for the center with two .20 pear-shaped stones on each side (similar to the Tiffany ring with the round center stone, pear sidestones). The thing concerning me is the color. I had wanted G or H, but in order to stay within our budget and get G or H ideal cut, I would've had to go with a stone in the range of 1.25 (instead of 1.7). The larger stone seemed to sparkle a LOT and it was beautiful - and when the jeweler showed me the diamond next to an H color diamond I couldn't really tell a difference - but I was wondering if anyone here thinks I made a mistake and the 1.25 G or H would've been a better choice over the 1.7 I. Also - will the side stones be too small next to the 1.7 center? I prefer smaller sidestones so the center diamond stands out more, but will this be TOO small? I'm SO excited for my ring - but I just wanted some opinions about whether I made the right decision! Thanks!! |

You don't mention if the stone you selected was an AGS/GIA graded stone, but if it was, I don't think you made a mistake at all in going for the larger I-colored stone. Well cut stones graded by the more stringent labs are an excellent compromise to get the size and stay in your budget, and they face up beautifully. Many of the gals here have done the same and have been thrilled with the results. It's hard to comment on the pears ratio because it's really a personal preference thing. I know one of the gals here has a 1-ct center with .15 pears and she wished she'd gone a bit bigger....maybe to .25s, I think. But, I think her ring is gorgeous as-is and *really* showcases her center stone. Can't wait to see the results - post pictures! Allison Dewey...."Alj" |

Hello - and congratulations! I understand your concern about colour. However, if you want to set your mind at rest, I would head over to Show Me The Ring and check out coatimundi's totally awesome RB solitaire. It blows me away every time I see a pic of it... and it's a K - I would never have guessed! There are lots of other amazing stones on here at I colour and below... I just picked coatimundi's as it realy sticks in my mind as a fabulous example. You've seen your stone with your eyes. It's beautiful - you said so yourself! :) I can't comment on your sidestones as I have no experience of choosing or designing a 3-stone ring... but it sounds absolutely wonderful to me. 1.7cts... WOW! Your own eyes are the best judge of what you love.. so trust your judgement and look forward to your beautiful ring. Looking forward to seeing some photos!! x x x

exactly what alj said. if the diamond was graded by AGS or GIA, then i wouldn't worry at all about the I color. those two labs are very strict with their grading so an ideal cut I color RB should not show any sign of yellow at all. i have a I color 1.64 stone and love it! for the sacrafice of a little color, you get to jump from 1.25ct to 1.7ct! that is totally worth it in my book. as for the pear side stones, you would have to see them in person to know if you like the size ratio. have you had a chance to see the pear sides next to your 1.7?
