So.. my girl is a little bit different when it comes to engagement rings. It had come up in conversation before and she had told me that she doesn't like the standard Tiffany band (I believe that is what it is called, just the big solo rock on top). She said it is too flashy and attention wanting "Oh! Look at my huge rock!" (That is what she said haha). Well... that makes ring shopping for me a little difficult! When you type in "engagement rings" on google that is the main thing that pops up. I am really clueless about ANYTHING to do with this except from very little that I read here. So I need help finding something that is unique, artistic, and maybe even fantasy like. A bit about her: She loves video games (Zelda in particular so anything with Legend of Zelda references would be amazing! Like triforce etchings on the band?), pirates, fantasy, adventure and green is her favorite color. She is a fun loving girl but when it comes to personal matters she is more reserved (which is why she doesn't want anything flashy). Does anyone have any ideas? I had designed a ring and found a place that could do it, but the over all thing could run pretty steep if it is custom (It was just some place in the mall... Ben DeVons or something?) As for stones I'm looking at Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (triforce colors!) and a Diamond that is Near Colorless and maybe 1/4-1/2 ct. I know cut is important too. But remember size of the diamond isn't a big concern to her (which is good on my pocket book )I live in Sacramento CA and visit San Francisco frequently. Any ideas? I'm so lost on what to do and I've been thinking about this a long time... [EDIT]: Ah yes, I also want to make sure that it is recognizable as an engagement ring and not just any sort of ring. |

Try browsing Green Lake Jewelers, they have incredible, unique, spirited work. Once you have a better idea of what you want, it'll be easier to make specific recommendations for you . Good luck with the search!

Ooo, I can really relate to your girlfriend. I quickly realized that brilliant cuts weren't for me and fell in love with step cuts. When I'd go to jewellers and tell them I wanted something "understated", I felt silly because most engagement rings aren't really understated, but they were always helfpul. I was very open to a sapphire or an eternity band (with step cuts). I ended up with an asscher center stone. In any case, I think it's tougher for women who prefer something more understated, so I would definitely go shopping WITH her. I think that something non-flashy and unique will be RIGHT up her alley.

Hmm...so do you know if she would prefer a colored stone or a diamond? Sapphire is a pretty popular choice for e-rings around here (check out the colored stones forum and look through the e-ring eye candy at the top of the threads). Emerals, while very pretty, are not very ideal for e-rings and everyday wear since they are a bit soft and fragile. Tsavorites are a beautiful choice if you want something green. As for styles...so she does not want a solitaire? Maybe a three stone design? Let me see what I can find with engraving... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

This is a celtic design, but I thought that it was really pretty...would she like something like this, or is this still too flashy? http://www.fallers.com/cart/view_product_detail.php?product_id=3091&category_id=225 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

For the zelda fan... here's something you can incorporate into your design, check out the 'trillian' diamond. You could even use that as the center diamond if you want, not too common, but it is unique, and wouldn't be flashy. Or incorporate that intot he ring itself, an idea for ya!

mercoledi: Thanks! I'm checking the site out now. NewEnglandLady: Nice to know there are other ladies like this! I thought about taking her with me, but I really want the whole thing to be a surprise, but it is kind of difficult if you don't quite know what you're looking for. She said she'd love a ring that came out of a bubble gum machine ![]() Diamond*Dana: Well, when it came with colored stones (if I was to use them) it would be the colors Red/Blue/Green together to represent the 3 colors of the Zelda Triforce. But I would like a Diamond in it because it is an e-ring. Etchings would be good, and I was looking at tension bands too which seem interesting too.

Diamond*Dana: That is really pretty, I like the idea of the band not being solid or just round. Having a design on it or having it twist in an interesting way is nice. I also like the idea Freakazoid had with the Trillion cut. Thanks for the link! Oh, and I noticed I missed one of your questions. I don't think she would want just a solitaire but that may be fine if the band has a distinct design that makes it look different. coatimundi: Thanks for this too! I'm looking at all the rings and trying to get ideas. I'm leaning mostly on a Trillion cut diamond. Whether it is set in the center or a little on the side I guess depends upon the band style. If there could be some Red/Blue/Green inlays in the band or if it was etched with a design, that would be good too. I'm looking at Gold or White Gold bands too (I'm thinking Yellow Gold would work best with Zelda in mind...)

How about a green sapphire in a tension setting? They are definitely unique and artistic without being flashy and work well with smaller stones. http://www.mickyroof.com/tension-settings.shtml |

Hmm, I think you're on the right track by looking at non Tiffany style settings, but I would caution against a totally themed ring, just in case she outgrows loving Zelda, etc. A trillion diamond would probably be my last choice for a surprise engagement ring. If you get her input and she's totally into the trillion diamond as a centerstone, then great, but without input, she could end up hating it. I really don't like trillion diamonds as centerstones-I think they're best as sidestones or a pendant. I think a better idea would be a great bezel set or tension set round diamond. Or you could go for a 3 stone, with a round centerstone and two trillion sidestones. You could have those be bezel set or just do them in a very low setting. Here's an example of a semi-bezel ring that I love from Etienne Perret. This one is in rose gold, but it is also available in white gold or platinum. ![]()

So I was looking around and I kind of like this band, particularly because it has the three stone on the side of the larger stone. And I think I could put the Ruby/Sapphire/Tsavorites where the three smaller ones are and then a Trillion cut diamond in the center.![]()

You should really try to find pictures of a diamond ring with a trillion cut centerstone-I think they're very awkward looking! Again, if you do want to go for a trillion centerstone, I would definitely check with her first. A better option is to do a round or square centerstone and then do trillion side stones.

Hmmm ... I really don't like the idea of a trillion center stone, but maybe a classic round center stone with either trillion or pear sides? This pic from bluenile.com shows an ideal cut AGS .49 ct center stone in a setting with pear sapphires and yellow gold - instead of pear sapphires, you could always do trillions - this ring costs about $1500, but you could go slightly lower on diamond quality and get something similar for around $1000 Also, I don't know about using all three colors in the sidestones - I would do either sapphires, emeralds or rubies, but not all 3 - she can add the other colors in her wedding band if she likes ... ![]()

Red/Green/Blue TOGETHER???? HELLLLLLSSS TO THE NO! Zelda-schmelda ... what makes you think she'll be "into" that 50 years from now?? Okay, I'm just joshing with you a bit ... but I'm serious that I don't think hobbies like that should be incorporated into an ENGAGEMENT ring. Just my personal opinion. Engagement is about the two of you and should (IMHO) be something classic enough to be likeable FOREVER. Sidenote: a female relative of mine HAS a ring with Rubies/Sapphires/Emeralds all together that her husband designed for her. It is HORRIFIC. You know, in my opinion. I think "green is her fave color" is something reasonable to work with ... Tsavorite garnets are gorgeous and sturdier than emeralds for an everyday ring. Or a diamond with a more unusual (less flashy) cut. Many of us "less flashy" gals ADORE asschers. You might like them too! And so might she! Good luck!

However I was wondering if I did do a Trillion cut if it would be too many "triangles". Perhaps a Round or Princess cut would work too. I really like the Scott Kay band that I posted earlier. I found that it is model M1220RD10FP but I cannot for the life of me find a dealer in my area that has this nor a price. Thank you everyone for your help. I'm wanting to purchase this in about 2-3 months.

im also a little worried about the trillion center stone. and i also think that you should stick to one color for the side stones rather than three, like go with a classic RB and maybe some green colored stones for the sides maybe emeralds or tsavs....heres a link to a couple http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=72907&pageNo=2 maybe if your really wanting to incorporate the three colors you can put them inside of the ring next to maybe an engraving of something special. that way it can kinda be like her little secret. i dunno it was just a thought.

Haha Well it may sound silly she has been into Zelda for over 20 years and it is a main part of her life. If she didn't like Zelda 50 years from now I'd be surprised! Almost everything about her has to do with it in some way or another (You should see her room...)That is the main reason I figured it could have a touch of Zelda in it. But even if we steer away from the Zelda inspiration here are some other thoughts: She likes leaves, so leaf engraving would be nice. She likes things like Lord of the Rings, Elves, etc. She also likes Greek/Roman designs. Her favorite color is Green. So... if I scrap the Zelda idea, I gotta find something that is whimsical, simple but not plain, and personal. Haha my girl is so difficult ![]() Sorry if I'm not personally answering comments there are so many now that when I get done with my own a few others already commented! But I greatly appreciate everyone's efforts!

ok, first off, what is your budget? I'm with deco that just b/c someone is "into" something doesn't mean it should be incorporated into an engagement ring. But, I do think you can probably find something that could symbolize the Zelda theme while still attempting to be somewhat classic. pearlmans is a pricescope vendor who carries scott kay. i didn't see the exact setting on their site but this one is close. scott kay settings aren't cheap so depending on your budget they may be out. this ring has 3 yellow sidestones, i think the colored sidestones are a great idea if you are 100% sure she'd like them in her e-ring. green tsavorites would be beautiful in this setting IMO http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-designers/scott-kay-jewelry/rings/32U1/66/ ![]() |

Well I'm hoping to not finance a ring and pay all up front (my credit isn't good due to unfortunate circumstances). I am looking for something $1,500 and lower for total cost. I know when it comes to really nice rings... it really makes things difficult. But I could finance it if it comes down to it and I find something really nice. I'd just need a co-signer

well, i'd suggest not financing if at all possible. if you buy from a vendor with an upgrade policy you can always leave the door open to trade in the stone and get her something larger down the road if you choose to. Does she want a diamond for the center stone or would she be open to a colored stone? you know the other setting that popped into my head when you described her is the tiffany etoile setting. you can find other companies that make something similar and it's got a modern twist yet still very classic IMO. here's the link: http://www.tiffany.com/Engagement/Item.aspx?subCategoryid=1003 |
