I remember an older thread where we talked about our favorite travel items... I thought I'd start a new one with a honeymoon slant  What are your must-have items?

Mine: 1. Chamomile Face Wipes (by Apivita). I love these! They are so refreshing, especially for beach vacations where you're slathering on the sunscreen. In-between applications it's so nice to clean off my face and start fresh.  2. "Fresh Pair" soap sheets... this can down your packed-skivvy count to 2 or 3. Love it.  3. Luggage Scale, because I'm always pushing the envelope with those weight limits   4. Go Clean bags (this one's for boots). I'm a little anal about keeping everything separate and clean.  5. BioSuds, or any other laundry tube. I like to pack really minimally and wear stuff over again. With washes in-between, of course. I like this stuff because it smells yummy and I haven't had any leakage-while-flying problems with the tube. 6. Travel Journal. I'm planning to find a nice one that FI and I can alternate making entries in, and keep ticket stubs, receipts, etc. in as mementos.  7. Packing cubes. No explanation needed.   8. A Tiffany's bag for my jewelry (the little drawstring suede one)

http://www.colorescience.com/1280x1024/flash/index.html Their sunscreen is the best. I burn REALLY easily and I never burn with this stuff. It is powder so it goes on over make-up and doesn't make me break out. It is expensive, but it lasts forever. Tweezers-nothing fancy, just something to keep me appropriately hairless. Also great for splinters and picking up cool things when tidepooling. Conditioner-again nothing fancy. Many hotels don't provide it or have very thin coditioner and changes in climate and altitude really mess with my hair, so I need to have my good stuff so I don't look like a monster at the end of the trip. Airborne/vitamin C- After being sick when I went to China which lead to a multitude of adventures (I went right after the SARS epidemic) I never travel without one of them. I travel very light and to very different kinds of places, so this is really all of my must haves.

A decent camera bag was a must have for my honeymoon check list. My parents got me this bag for my DSLR camera for Christmas and I love it. It is the perfect size to take on the airplane and has good support for my camera, but also compartments for me to throw in a book, my sunscreen, or a few souvenirs we may buy when we're out. Travel essentials for me include the same routine I use at home. A lot of people I know will just buy travel shampoo, even if it isn't the kind of shampoo they use at home, and I just can't do it. I need my system and I'll sacrifice...something...in order to take it. (Most of the time, the sacrifices come from FI's suitcase to give me more space!) My sunscreen of choice is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry. I used it for 4 weeks last summer in Greece and Turkey and never got burned. I swear by that stuff. Love it. June is the rainy season in Costa Rica, but hopefully it will get some use. :)

I know this sounds funny, but I bring my laptop. I know I could use the hotel business center, but bringing my laptop has made it so much easier on me. Not only that, but I could clear out my camera, watch a movie, chat, research places to go, etc. I'm drooling over the mac Air now.

Seems silly but if we are going to a tropical climate I bring a small spray bottle (for water). I tend to over heat in the sun and nothing feels better than a cool mist when you are laying by the pool. Also DH and I played a lot of cards (by the pool). It was fun and relaxing. Something we rarely have time for at home. Depending on where you are going bug spray might be a good idea

I LOVE Philosophy's Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash... ya just need one bottle to bring to the shower (I hate public showers, so the less I bring the better!). It really conditions well; I have fine hair (though a LOT of it), and hotel shampoo makes it a mad tangled mess! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

bugspray flashlight cause you never know  that and i'm paranoid. ha.oh, and extra camera batteries. OH, and travel converters if you're going somewhere outside usa.

Oh, and travel candles...love those! Just be sure not to burn down your room...And a little mini Molton Brown room spray or that Orange Mate room mist, because I love for my hotel rooms to smell like my home, not some random cleaning product...

This probably won't be an issue on anyone's honeymoon, since everyone's going to nice places, but I went to a conference last year in New York and stayed in hotel with the dimmest bathroom I've ever been in. You couldn't see to do your hair or makeup. Worse yet, I was sharing a room with a colleague I didn't know that well, so didn't feel comfortable getting ready out in the room. As I am traveling to another conference in April and have no idea what the "conference hotel" will be yet, I'm wondering what I can do to combat a dark bathroom? I thought about buying some of those little battery operated stick-on click lights, but I have a feeling they'd be too dim to help. Has anyone else encountered this problem? What can be done about horrid, dark hotel bathrooms? As someone who MUST dry and curl and product-up her hair, I must have light!! lol.

Great thread, musey! I actually have the same luggage scale and packing cubes you posted!  I always pack a small polarized extension cord as well as a triple outlet plug to stick in the bathroom. These have been helpful when there is more than one person needing the bathroom...this way I can dry my hair out in the room while someone else uses the shower/bathroom, etc... If it's a local trip, my own pillow...haven't figured out how to get that one to Maui yet, though! Cell phone charger and camera battery charger or extra batteries. Headphones for cell phone to listen to music on plane, on beach, etc... I also bring scented tealight candles to burn (also putting two in my welcome bags for our guests in Maui!) A nylon laundry bag for things that just can't be washed in a hotel room and that I don't want to put back in with my clean clothes if I have any left or have done laundry while there. My own shampoo/conditioner/hair product as my hair takes a whole lot of all of 'em or it's a huge disaster! Which I guess means I need my hairdryer, my diffuser, my round brush and a curling iron for my bangs...ugh! Small, flat pocket mirror to check out the back of my mop of hair in the big mirror! Slippers or flip-flops...I get grossed out walking on those hotel room floors sometimes! Bug spray, water spray bottle for the beach, lip balm with SPF & sunscreen! On a side note, FI has kindly agreed to let me go hog-wild at the Wal-Mart in Maui when we arrive to pick up enough toiletries to last the 2 1/2 weeks we'll be gone...he knows how much of each I use and how quickly I go through it, so he agreed it would be smarter to pay a little bit more over there while saving us the hassle of trying to lug it with us. We will also get some detergent, deodorant, face wash, etc..., to last us the entire time we're there. There is also a Costco nearby, so we can also stock up on necessities like bottled water, snacks, etc... Harleigh |
