Hi,
I love this dress (melissa sweet jillian) http://www.priscillaofboston.com/dress_detail.jsp?gid=23&sfid=50473&f=  and the bridal salon offered to sell me the sample for $2500.  The retail is $4200. I'm just wondering what the going rate for sample dresses is.  I wasnt planning on buying a dress so soon.
Thanks for you ideas.

It depends what kind of shape the dress is in. I bought a sample Melissa Sweet and I think I got a little overcharged for the shape the dress was in. She charged me $2000 and the dress is normally $3800. See if they will clean it for you for free? That's what the salon I bought from offered.

From what I understand it has only been tried on a couple of times because it for the new upcoming season's line.  I think she said they got it in December, although I'm not sure. The dress looked to be in fantastic shape, but I could have just had pretty dress blinders on.  I'm going again next friday to take another look, so I'll be a little more critical.

Even if it is a good price, you may still end up paying more than you expect on alterations.  If the dressis too small or 2+ sizes too big it can quickly get expensive to alter, particularly if it is complex with lace overlays, beading, boning, etc.  Just something that has happend to a few brides here and caused them problems

I LOVE the Jillian! I'm wearing the Mila for my wedding, but the Jillian was definitely my second favorite dress. It is STUNNING!

I think my salon had it listed for $3800 new, but I could be wrong.

Now, I don't know much about sample dress prices, but I would say that I'd only buy a sample MS dress if it fit me very well because MS will scale the dress down for you when you order it new instead of just chopping it off at the bottom. I think this type of customization is CRITICAL for a dress like the Jillian which is so fitted.

If it fits you, though, and you're comfortable with the price, go for it.

(I do wonder why they're selling the Jillian sample already? It's a fairly new dress, are they selling it because something is wrong with it?)

Good luck!

The good news is that it fit really well, which is why they were saying they were offering it to me.  I could have walked out of the store and gone straight to the chapel in it I really dont think there was anything wrong with it, but like I said before I'll take a much closer look on Friday. I just had no idea how much a sample should cost.

I don't know what I good cost on a sample gown would be, but I would look to see how much the dress cost or other melissa sweet dresses cost. The "buy it now" cost would be a good indicator. Most business won't sell an item brand new and not make a profit.

good luck. great dress.

I think that's a good price on a sample assuming that it's in good condition with no major repairs needed. If you check on ebay and used dress sites most people seem to try to resell their designer dresses for about half the cost of a new dress.

Plus, you get the dress NOW and don't have to chance it coming in late or in the wrong size - peace of mind is worth a lot to me.
