Okay,
I just read a post in which WF chipped a diamond during the setting process.  Um, well I was wondering if where the been bought. Because WF said they wouldn't insure my diamond if they chipped it during setting it.  So has anyone had WF set their diamond and had it chipped?  What did you do?  My insurence will only insure a set stone, so my diamond isn't under policy yet.   I am wondering because I am planning on having them set a diamond I bought else where and they told me my diamond isn't insured if they chip it.  I almost want to cancle my setting and buy a plain one from GOG where I bought my diamond!  I am very scared that I am going to spen 1300.00 on a ring and my diamond might be chipped and we can't afford to buy a new one!  Let me know asap because I may cancle my CAD and get a plan setting until a later date andn then buy a new setting!

Hmmm...maybe you should have GOG set it into the cheapest setting that they have, insure it, and then send the entire ring off to WF to have them reset it into your setting.  You could always reset a colored stone in the temp setting...or sell it!

1: ask WF about a JM policy before its set, it will cover it, there is a specific procedure they will have too follow.
2: have it set in a silver setting or a gold filled setting($25-$30) then insure as a ring with a company that will cover it during a reset. JM or others.
3: get a quote from GOG's designer on the ring, they work with a good one.

I bought my diamond from WF and had a local jeweler set it.  I had insurance on the diamond before anyone worked on it.

I would set it in the cheapest setting from GOG, you can ask Jon which one that is. Then have it insured and send it to WF to have it set in you dream setting that you have designed!
That way it's protected and you still get exactly what you want,.

Interesting, when I sent them my diamond to be set, I was told that it WAS covered by insurance. Of course, the diamond wasn't chipped so I don't know what would have happened in the event that it was damaged.

So it was WF who chipped it and didn't say something about the fact they had done it? That part confused me.

This is the scary part of the process. Can anyone shed light on how they are able to chip it? And is it really only a big problem with the squares? I'm just not sure what they are doing with the diamond which would cause it to chip.

Most jewelers will NOT insure a diamond when they work on it. WF will if it is one of theirs.

JM will issue insurance on a loose stone (no need for temp setting) if you get the stone valuation AND the detailed setting quote to them, obviously before work begins. I have done this when I had a Mark Morrell setting done with a WF stone.

There is always a chance that a stone will chip when it is being worked on. When you consider the hundreds and thousands of stones WF set, the chances of breakage are not high. However that is what insurance is for.

Call JM. They are the only ones I know that issue cover for the setting of a loose stone.

No, it wasn't WF. It was a local jeweller. But because the original thread was about diamonds chipping Sparklious brought up her diamond chipping experience and how the jeweller in her case (WF) acted very honourably. This brought up the point that if the person you buy the stone from is not the person setting the stone then the setter will not have the stone insured while setting it so you need private insurance. This led RedRose229 to second guess her choices of working with two different jewellers and post about it.

Just got off the phone with JM.  They lady was mean to me!  She spoke to me like I was stupid for asking them to insure a loose diamond!  She says they DO NOT insure loose stones.  She said that I would have to have an appraisal of both the mounting and the diamond for them to insure it.  Needless to say I probably won't be doing business with them!

gosh, sorry stephanie. JM does insure stone while being set but you have to take on a policy with them as well.

why not just buy a cheapo setting from GOG, insure the ring with the insurance company you were planning on insuring with and then send it to WF for the new setting. the ring would be covered during a reset. chipping does happen but it's not super common and most of the time, from my understanding it's the corners of princess cut stones that get chipped.

I think I may be able to help a little here, and add a bit of perspective as well.

I know a lot of people seem to be focused on the issue of 'chipping during setting', and when folks focus on something, it can be easy to lose perspective on it, so I want to remind folks that chipping a stone during setting is an extremely RARE occurrence.  I've been on PS for five years now, and I don't even think I can recall more than 2-3 instances where it's happened among all the vendors here.

Speaking just for Whiteflash, we set thousands and thousands of stones a year, and I don't think this happens even once a year for us.  I'm sure the same is true for the other vendors here.  I'm a huge fan of planning for the unexpected, so I think it's great that everyone seems to be talking about this lately, but let's remember too that we're talking about something that almost never happens.

Redrose.....I've done some homework that I think will help you and benefit others in your same situation.  I called today and spoke with a very nice woman, Vicky O'Brien, in the Personal Jewelry department of Jewelers Mutual.  They can help in this situation, and here's how you do it for pieces less than $50,000 value.

        1.  Get an appraisal on your stone.  Get an appraisal or receipt for your mounting.
        2.  Submit both to Jeweler's Mutual.  You can fax this to them at 920-969-1294.  Once they receive the fax, you have coverage.
        3.  Jewelers Mutual will insure it as one piece, and it will be covered during setting.

This applies to instances where you don't buy the stone/setting from the same vendor.

For those who buy the stone and setting from Whiteflash, as per our FAQ here, we are responsible for any damage.  If we damage our stone in setting, we will replace it with like or better quality.

I hope this helps everyone.  Redrose, there's no reason to sacrifice on the setting you have your heart set on.

She did give you the right information there is a specific procedure that has too be followed as noted above in several posts.
If you feel she was rude too you please call and talk too a supervisor and complain.

Wow, you've had terrible luck with "mean" people treating you like you're stupid!  Thank goodness for Ali and all the hard work she's done for you!  Hopefully you'll have your dream ring in no time!
