I am picking out an E-ring for my gf and want it to be a surprise. I have pretty much decided to go with a round solitare in a 4 prong platnium band, which could be "upgraded" shortly down the road (after closing on house). What would you think might be her ring perference? She has never wore a ring since I have dated her (3 years); only jewelry she wears is a silver watch that I have given her, and a diamond heart necklace. She wears a set of diamond earings her father gave her once a month or so (if we go out to a nice dinner etc). Dispite her lack of interest in jewelry she has a pretty developed fashion sense (D&B bags, coach bags, steven madden shoes, michael corrs etc). She is early 20's. As a lady what does this say to you? |

Well if you're already thinking about upgrading it, and you say she doesn't wear much to begin with a round with a simple setting sounds like a good choice to me.

Round solitaire sounds good to me...if you're looking for a size opinion...I think 1 carat is always a safe bet.

What does she do for a living? What are her favorite colors? What do her favorite shoes look like? Does she wear jeans everyday and pair them with cute shoes and a cute shirt? How does she dress? She's got good taste. I'm a big Steve Madden fan. Like, HUGE. Although, I have to confess, those aren't SMs in my avatar... _______________________________ "Women are either goddesses or doormats." Hrmmm I love the vatche x-prong for a 4 prong solitaire looks clean modern and understated :) If she not into jewelery too much it will be beautiful but not OTT flashy :) GL :) __________________________________________________________ ![]() Sometimes if your really lucky all your dreams do come true ............... |

If you're planning to upgrade, and you're not sure what she would like, I'd get a plain GOLD setting instead of platinum, then let her pick the setting. No sense spending several hundred or a a thousand dollars on something that will be shortly discarded. I agree that an RB solitaire is the way to go, then let her pick what she wants for the upgrade. Size-wise, I wouldn't just try to get a carat. I would figure out what you are comfortable spending, and then get a quality stone for that amount. So, see what size you can get in an excellent / G / SI1 quality for your budget. The folks on Rocky Talky can help you pick a stone.

I think that a solitaire would be perfect.

I would say a solitaire....as for size, whatever you and your wallet are comfortable with purchasing!

So, see what size you can get in an excellent / G / SI1 quality for your budget. The folks on Rocky Talky can help you pick a stone. Yes, yes, yes!!!! IG gave the best advice about that setting: definitely should be gold. If she prefers the white metals, then white gold is a good choice, but definitely wait to get platinum. In shopping for the actual center stone, it's probably a good idea to set a budget BEFORE you start shopping. It's just too easy to fall in love with something that's out of range, so limiting your range beforehand may ensure that you only look at what you afford (discipline is the key) Regarding the stone; the Rocky Talky thread is a really great resource. You'll discover that, around here, "Cut is King." Meaning that most of the advice you'll receive will advise you to go for the most beautifully cut stone that you can afford, instead of the highest carat weight. The most interesting thing I learned from the forums is that a poorly cut stone of higher carat weight can actually look smaller than a well-cut stone of lesser carat weight. Have fun looking for the ring! Congratulations on your decision to become engaged, this is going to be such a happy time for both of you!!! Enjoy every minute of it....

First, congratulations on finding a woman you want to marry. Now, is there anyone you could talk to in order to get an idea of what she likes? I know everyone else said a plain solitaire sounds good, but just because she doesn't wear much jewelry that doesn't mean she's a plain solitaire OR a round diamond gal. I don't wear much jewelry on a regular basis, but I am as far from a plain solitaire RB girl as you can get. I'm just sayin' . . . Frekechild asked you very good questions--maybe these answers could help give us some more insight into your lady's style than the short list of brand names you gave in your original post. Also, about the upgrade--is she the sentimental sort who is going to want to keep THE RING you presented when you proposed? Just make sure that this isn't her if you're buying with an upgrade in mind. I don't want to sound like I'm raining on your parade, I'm really trying to help you out here by asking some important questions. Good luck! ********************************************************** |

Favorite color is pink, her favorite shoes are steve madden loucee's and luvvey's (casual heel i would call them?)

Does she have a best friend you could talk to about it, to find out what her style for rings might be? I also think it's a really good idea to think about how sentimental she is--my boyfriend and I are choosing my ring together because I am a sentimental soul and want that exact ring to be with me for the rest of my life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Great advice everyone! I second the opinion that she might not like plain jane RB solitaires, and suggest you try to find out her style in both stone shapes and settings. Can I ask what shape her diamond earrings are? If she picked them out, maybe it will tell us about which stone shape she prefers. Since rounds are kinda the default for studs, the game's still open if they're rounds, but if they're some sort of square cut or pears or some other special shape, we'll know that's her preference since they're slightly harder to find.(This doesn't hold of course, if they were randomly selected by her father.)

However, what I'd do is pop some surprise pink sapphires into the sides...Here's a pic with diamond surprise stones Just out of curiosity, what color Loucee and Luvvy? Black? Black patent? The red and white ones? (the red are my favorite!)

Oooh, FrekeChild, that ring is classic! And classy. And cute. And just simply beautiful. Can you tell me likes a lot?![]() One more thing, if your GF is into brand names, would she notice the brand for the setting? Just one more thing to consider.

Hi ws6 ![]() PLEASE DO NOT GET HER A SOLITAIR! Too common of a ring to get - every girl who's guy picked out a ring for her has a solitaire. Go with differance! Princess Cuts are the in- right now. There are so many other choices then a round stone and a plain white gold band! Platnium is so nice but so soft and scratches so fast! I understand your upgrading down the road but get her something a bit flashy - chances are she won't want to upgrade the 'first' given ring so make it count to begin with! I am a coach freak among other desingners but when it comes to rings ... whole different story. Mine is a custom made 1.4K princess cute with 1/2 solitaires of the sides, set in white gold, platnium prongs - wheat cut band. Color D - Flawless. It cost too much - yes but it was custom.. you can find the same prettiness in a home town jewler.. not a "mall jewler" good luck! And Congrats!
