ws6 Rough Rock Total Posts: 4 Last Post: 2/18/2008 Member Since: 2/16/2008	Hi all, first I would like to thank all the regulars on this forum, I have learned quite a bit in the past few weeks here. I visted a local indepenent jewlery store today looking for an engagment ring. The diamond I liked is round cut 0.83, G, SI-2 with a 4 prong all platnium setting. Not knowing the rest of the details what would your price range be for this ring? For comparison a round cut 0.66 E VS-2 diamond was offered at $2385 which I felt was very fair. Comments? Thoughts? Has anyone bought from a very small local jeweler before?

Cleo Ideal Rock Total Posts: 931 Last Post: 9/21/2008 Member Since: 1/26/2008	Hello and welcome :) Is the diamond you were looking at certified by a reputable grading laboratory (such as GIA or AGS)? I'm guessing that your jeweller didn't give you any information as to the quality of the cut grade of the diamond you were looking at? The cut grade of the diamond actually makes a dramatic difference to the cost and value of the stone... and is also the single most important factor in determining the beauty of the diamond. Have you considered looking online to buy a diamond? I realise that might seem a bit scary at first - but most PS members have done this, and with great results. Buying online does mean you can get the very best quality, and at a much discounted price from bricks & mortar (B&M) stores. To answer your question, to buy a loose 0.83ct AGS or GIA certified, Ideal cut, G, SI2 diamond I would say you could be looking at something around $2500 to $3000 if you bought online. I would say that this is likely to be considerable cheaper than your B&M store was asking, even taking into account the cost of a 4-prong platinum setting? x x x

ws6 Rough Rock Total Posts: 4 Last Post: 2/18/2008 Member Since: 2/16/2008	I compared the 0.66 carat diamond to ones I found online, and found the B&M store to be the same, if not cheaper than the major online outlets. http://www.bluenile.com/diamonds_details.asp?pid=LD00478959 is for a "good" cut, the stone from the local store was a "very good" and not much more than $100 more expensive. All the stones I looked at had a GIA cert.

Going for the best possible cut would help to mask any slight tint in the stone, as well as making a dramatic difference in the fire, brilliance & scintillation of the diamond. If you like what you have found, then that's fantastic... I just thought I'd throw that in as an idea for you to consider. :) x x x
