I'm looking at buying a diamond. One of the ones that I am considering (at a local jewler wher I have a friend working) is a clarity VS2 color K just over 1 carrot stone that is an old miners cut. I don't know any of the proportions. How much less does the rest of the world think that this stone is worth than a more modern cut of a nearly identical stone?

Oh lovely! How lucky you are. I wish I had a definitely answer for you. From my impression of the market, it seems rather variable. Some jewelers actually use the same prices as with modern diamonds. I suspect Beverly Hills jewelers sell them as "antiques" and price them way over what the rest of the country does.

The OMC I have is an H color, VS2, .96 and I bought it for under $3K (sorry, I can't remember how much under). That, though, is, from what I've seen, an exceptionally low price. I think you shouldn't pay as much as you would for a modern diamond, so if no experts can give you advice, perhaps you can look up what a poorly-cut, similar color & clarity goes for and either use that price or see if you can bargain down 10% or more. Good luck and please let us know what you uncover!

Hi Tyrrell
Here are some old miner price indicators from a New York wholesaler adjusted to average Internet vendor price.
Hope this helps.

Any one of the pricescope vendors would be able to source one for you if required

Regards
Wayne

Thank you for your replys

Sadly I'm not sufficently versed in diamondese to interpret all of the information in your post (I studied minneralogy in my master's program but dropped out my PhD program just before I was to TA the class on Gems). I have got my hands on a sheet of paper from the diamond supplier from whom the Jewler got the stone. It says;

1.02Ct
shape and cut- round brilliant
Diameter 6.36-6.53
Crown angle 34.5 ID
Crown Height 17.1% EX
Pavil angle 41.6 Ex
Pavil Depth 42.6% EX
Culet 3.1% EX
Table size 50.5% VG
Total Depth 62.8%, 4.05mm
Girdle thickness% 0.4- 1.3 v.thin-medium ID
Proportion very good
Symmetry fair
polish fair
clairty VS2
color L
Fluoressence none

Comments: old mine cut

Is this sufficent information for me to use to get a good understanding of the reasonable price of the gem to make certain the the jewlry store isn't taking advantage of my "it's an engagement ring, I don't care about price" attitiude. (Yes my friend is the manager of the store but the store is part of a chain and she's not worked anyplace else. She'll get me the best price that she can but I'd like to make certain that her overhead isn't killing me. Giving her one or two hundred extra dollars is ok an extra thousand would be bad) If this is enough information is there a website that has a calculater that I can use?

(Or you could be really nice and just post a well supported opinion.)

Thanks for your help

Hi Tyrrel
Sorry about the confusion
The specs on the stone look about average for an OMC.
As a price guideline based on the New York wholesale price you should be paying around $2300.00 from an Internet vendor. I suppose its unlikely that a chain store would match an Internet vendor so use this price indicator as a good low price.
