Saw a tsavorite for the first time today . . .

I saw a tsavorite for the first time today.  (It was on a co-worker so I asked her what it was.)  Now, are they supposed to be as dark as the mall sapphires that I have - meaning it was a green/black and you could not see into it at all?

Another question - is a tsavorite the same thing as a green garnet?

Thanks.

I doubt it.
A Tsavorite is a green Garnet, but there are other green Garnets.

Tsavs are the same thing as sapphires in terms of color vs. price. The mall quality ones look like dark junk, and the high quality ones have deep beautiful color.

And yes, it is a type of green garnet.

a high end, high quality tsavorite garnet will not have black extinction.  however, they go for thousands per carat.  pala has an 1.31 carat oval for $2227 which is a bargain if its everything they say it is.  they also have a trio totaling 3.45 carats for $8,280.  a tsavorite if well cut should be green and i'm going to use the word glowing with no black extinction.  personally, i can't abide extinction and would rather do w/o than have to look at it.  but that's me.  we each make a decision as to what the tradeoffs are when we buy diamonds and/or color stones.

Since everyone else has answered your question I would just like to add that nice tsavorites are gorgeous, bright and sparkling stones.

I very nearly bought the 1.31ct for my friend's e-ring. In the end I went with a 1.22ct that Pala reckoned was as good as the 1.31. Wink seemed pretty impressed with it. I am so tempted to buy that one, but I don't know what I'd do with it!

Tsavorites really sparkle and glow when they are good - they look different in different lights. If you look at the pics of my e-ring, you can see the difference between daylight and artifical light.

The stone should be transparent and you should be easily able to look into it.

I'm very picky about colour and I like tsavs that are just a tiny bit on the darker side. I wouldn't go any darker than mine though.

Mine is a 1.42ct cushion and was from Pala as well - they have some of the best stones I have ever seen.

The good ones are not cheap, but to my mind they are worth every penny!

go for it Pandora!  prices are going and will continue to go up only.  someday you'll have that project and wish you had that stone.  do you have a pendant yet?

ok, i'm an enabler......while you're at it, you could get that threesome instead:  two for earrings, one for the pendant.  oh, how i love spending your $$$$!

So.... here's a massive one (325.15 carats), described as that illusive jello green that every connoisseur of tsavorite asks for... Price: $2,200,000.00

If I wasn't trying to pay for a wedding I'd get it like a shot!

I'm working on another little project right now - which I'll put some details up when I get some news about the rocks!

You are very bad by the way - you are telling me all the reasons that makes me know I'd be mad not to buy that tsav!

Yes...

FI wants to give me something as a wedding present and has told me to give Wink a 'wish list', so I'm designing a pendant and earrings - whichever he doesn't buy, I will.

I'll post up some pics of design ideas when I've got round to drawing them up.

Humpf!

Actually, I would love someone on PS to buy that Pala tsav - if I can't have it, at least it will have gone to a good home!

I would like the full tsav set someday - but it won't go as well with my wedding dress as sphene will!

I like the colour, but am looking for a cushion in a bigger size.

Saw tsavorites for the first time yesterday at my local jeweler's.  They were gorgeous and sparkly.  Are they general untreated?

Oooh, what size? I'm more of a cushion person myself.

I was originally looking for a squareish cushion for Claire's ring - but there wasn't anything available. I'd have carried on looking, but time was super-short (can you believe Wink managed a custom setting in just over 2 weeks ).

Then I saw the quality of the ovals and knew it would be hard to find anything to beat them.
