Hello everyone,

Does anyone have a photo of a "true blue" (not paraiba) tourmaline that they could share?  I've purchased a ring in which the main stone was identified to me as a blue tourmaline.  It doesn't look like any of the blue tourmalines that I've found pictures of on the web.  It actually looks a lot like a medium-blue tanzanite or a ceylon blue sapphire.  (I don't think it's a natural tanzanite because it's checkerboard cut, and I've never seen a checkerboard cut on a tanzanite.)  I tried to get an RI on it but it's a bezel set stone so no reading in the setting.  I've attached an abysmal photo that I took with my phone.  (Sorry, my camera isn't working right now.)

Any chance that it's really a blue tourmaline?  Many thanks.

Kristina

Best,
Kristina

Looks more like blue topaz to me.  Where did you purchase it?

eBay.  I know, I know.  I've actually had pretty good luck there - combination of luck and due diligence.

I don't think it's topaz.  It's more purple than it is depicted in my photo.  It's actually closer to this color.

It could definietly be a tourmaline. The presence of maganese in can create this violetish blue color. Here is a picture of a "mozambique" tourmaline out of Africa. I have seen them much brighter than this though, but this is the best pic I could find.

Thanks so much.  I'm thinking my best bet is to pop the stone out and just check the RI.  I'll post the results.

Best,
Kristina
