I'm very much enamored with the Niessing Open End Tension setting in 18k grey gold (would be looking for a .5-.65ct diamond). How much should I expect to pay for this setting? Can I expect to negotiate the price down from the listed price? I've been quoted around $3000. Thoughts on best places to get Niessing settings? I would prefer to deal either locally here in Boston, or out in Los Angeles where I'll soon be moving. Very new to all of this, so appreciate any help!

Can't help you with the local thing, but I found Hamilton Hill Jewelery, http://www.hamiltonhilljewelry.com/ to have the best prices for Niessing. Great service too. Do a search on Niessing, there's some other's experiences too.

Good luck, I love the Niessing settings!

quadrum gallery in the chestnut hill mall (newton) carries niessing. i looked at their settings once, but they didn't seem interested in negotiating the price. maybe that's because i didn't seem serious enough.

Thanks. They're the ones who gave me the quotes I have currently. I'll see if they want to negotiate.

Not sure if it will help you but I found some FAQ's on the Niessing website ... Maybe these will help or you should be able to contact them for assistance with vendors who carry their product?

Here is the link

Good luck with your search!

Thanks, wrote them for local dealers. If anyone has purchased a Niessing Open End or Everest setting recently and is willing to share pricing, please let me know!

Yes, in fact, that's basically what I have in mind (slightly smaller diamond). Sadly, no way to contact him.

Have gotten a few quotes from a few different shops. Still trying to get a sense of how much wiggle room I have to negotiate price down (if any).

Thanks for all the help so far!

Hey Rainer,

Sorry for not seeing your post earlier. After I dropped my $$ on the ring and got a yes, I realized that looking at more rings and doing more research would only make me wish I'd gotten her something brighter and fancier and newer! That being said, we love the ring!

I have also seen your thread regarding negotiating the price of the setting so I will try to comment on that if I can.

1) I am from Canada and paid $2880CAN for the 18K Grey Gold Open-End in it's smallest width (4mm for 0.55-0.75carats).

2) I used Hunter-Davidson in Calgary and they were fantastic. They did a couple of key things that some other tension setting jewelers offered.
a) They offered to resize the ring for me in the event it didn't fit for no cost. Some other tension setting dealer's I worked with would charge a $200 flat fee or a 10% ring fee. It was a surprise engagement and tension settings are notorious for being very difficult to resize. The ring I got was 4.75 and a touch large so I had to bring it in the resize.
b) They (and Niessing) guaranteed the setting for 1 year excluding extreme forces and unusual circumstances.
c) If you buy the diamond from them, they cover transporting the diamond to the LA Niessing store for setting and all insurance for this process.

3) With regards to Niessing settings, all of them in North America are sent to the Los Angeles store for the actual setting process. The shank comes from Germany. Since you might be moving to Los Angeles, you may want to contact the store out there.

4) These are the quotes for the various Niessing settings I looked at. These are only the setting alone.

Everest

With this model the minimum size stone is .50ct. The same shank applies to stones up to .79ct.
18 k grey gold $2740, Platinum $5090

Narcissus

.25 -.35ct 18 k grey gold $4415, Platinum $8500
.36 -.47ct 18 k grey gold $4870
.48 -.70ct 18 k grey gold $5530

Flat

.25 -.45ct 18 k grey gold $3200, Platinum $5680
.46 -.80ct 18 k grey gold $3500, Platinum $6340

Open-end
0.50-0.75 18k grey gold $2880

5) For some other approximate prices, you can check out www.niessingshop.com which is their online store.

Hope that helps!
