Hi All,

Needless to say I’m very thankful I’ve found this site and am very appreciative of the time spent by those on this forum that share their opinion and feedback as well as those that seem to provide endless amounts of expert advice and information.  I’ve been lurking for a while, listening & trying to learn as much as possible in order to make at least a semi-educated purchasing decision.

I’m looking to buy a PR shape stone (1.5ct F VS2) for a new solitaire that I want to have made for my wife.  Time is not a factor one way or another, but I’m getting to where I would like to make the purchase in the near future.

My initial budget was $9k-$10k, but that was before I really fully understood the critical importance of the various cut attributes (beyond depth and table) on the visual performance of the stone, thanks in large part to this forum.  With that said, I’ve increased my budget some in hopes of finding a stone that while may not have the pedigree of an AGS Ideal (which is probably more than I want to spend), will measure up and perform just about as well.

I would really like to know everyone’s opinion on this stone that GOG has in their inventory and if there is anything about this stone that might otherwise be a potential concern in their opinion.  http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond.php?d=2856&shape=16&ctMin=1.5&ctMax=1.7&clarity=48&color=6&resultsColumns=268435471&singleResult=1

The one potential concern I have is with the size/location of the inclusions…  Both the one near the girdle and the one close to the corner?  Also, could the size of these inclusions make this stone a borderline eye clean SI1 if a very strict appraiser got a hold of it?

Also, given the ongoing debate of the applicability of using Bscope results on fancy shapes, I’ll take that piece of data with a grain of salt, but the video that Jonathan has on his site shows the stone to perform very well in my novice opinion.

This appears to be a very nice stone and perhaps one that might provide comparable light performance to an AGS ideal, but at a relative discount?

Trying to decide if I should pull the trigger or keep searching.

GOG seems to have an excellent reputation on this board and Jonathan seems highly trustworthy, so I have no reason not to take his word that this is a great stone.  Still, before making a significant purchase like this, based on the available information, I wouldn’t mind confirmation from some of the unbiased experts on the board either.

I’ve also been talking with WF (I will say that Katie has been excellent to deal with and has the patience of Jobe) to try to locate a few candidates out in the market that might measure up and perform comparably, such as these below.

The downside is that they will have to call those in to evaluate in which time the GOG stone could either be sold or I could incur shipping charges if these make WF’s Expert Selection grade, but I decide I don’t like them as much as the GOG stone for any reason.

At the end of the day, I have no reservations in going with either GOG or WF as they both seem to be excellent companies to do business with and at some point will hopefully have the opportunity to deal with BOTH

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this post and provide your opinion.

I am very sad to say that I typed out a longer reply and lost it! So this is a shorter response!

I think the diamond looks very nice!  I wouldn't worry about inclusions in a VS2. An appraiser certainly can grade something higher or lower than the cert. But I wouldn't let that worry me for a second! In fact, I saw zero reason to have my stones from GOG and WF reappraised. I know how much they are supposed to cost, and I also have a cert from an independent, respected grading lab.

I'd say this one is worth ordering if you like it since you have the benefit of all the info on it as well as video.

~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~
Thanks DiamondSeeker... Sorry about your original post... I would have liked to have read all you had to say.
P.S.  I think I read in another post you were talking about Karat Patch in Charlotte.  I take it you live in the area or had at one time?
Welcome any other opinions please!
As you know, the GOG diamond is an in house diamond and as such is a known quantity, the others aren't and have to be called in.  The GOG diamond looks beautiful, also no worries with inclusions in a VS clarity.  Also looking at it in the video, it looks to be an amazing diamond, absolutely stunning!!!
Nothing is more sacred as the bond between horse and rider...no other creature can ever become so emotionally close to a human as a horse. When a horse dies, the memory lives on because an enormous part of his owner's heart, soul, very existence dies also...but that can never be laid to rest, it is not meant to be...
I think it's a gorgeous stone! I'd go for it.
And I echo that you should have no probems with the VS clarity. But for your own peace of mind, just talk with Jon. He'll be totally honest with you.
-Murray N. Rothbard, in The Anatomy of the State
John Swinton [1829-1901] Chief Editorial Writer of the New York Times (Considered "the Dean of his Profession" by his peers), when asked to toast an 'Independent Press' in a gathering at the National Press Club, circa 1880
"There is no such thing in America as an independent press unless it is in the country towns. You know it, and I know it. There is not one of you who dare express an honest opinion. If you express it you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid... for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for doing similar things....
The business of the New York journalist is to distort the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and sell his country and race for his daily bread, or for what is about the same thing, his salary. You know this, and I know it and what foolery to be toasting an 'independent press.' We are tools, and the vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are jumping-jacks. They pull the strings and we dance. Our time, our talents, our lives, our possibilities, all are the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes."
The GOG princess stone is a stunner.  I cannot comment on the other 2 WF ES princess stones without pictures.
