Looks like the picture didn't work - sorry.  You can copy and paste the URL.

I've found out more about the ring.  The ruby has been heated.  It was taken from another ring and placed in an original Edwardian setting, according to New York Estate Jewelry.  They e-mailed me the AGTA certificate, but most of it is too small to read.

Ok, figured out how to insert a link.  Hope this works.

I'd love to know what you all think about this.  Is it overpriced?

Thanks.

It is a very beautiful ring. Pretty ruby and nice clean design...  I love the prongs!

However, I'm not really comfortable with their return policy. So basically, no returns- unless you can prove the item was misrepresented is the impression I'm getting. Policies like this always make me wonder- if this item really is so great, then why wouldn't they take it back? ..

Good point about the return policy.  I hadn't even looked at that yet.  It doesn't seem very practical - who would spend that kind of money sight unseen if the item could not be returned?  I'm going to ask them about it.  Thanks.

Here's what they say:

You could return the ring for any reason, but keep in mind that the refund will be minus 2.9% and insurance.

Thats good to know about the return policy..

As far as pricing...Colors aren't always represented correctly in photos- For example: red, vs. very slightly purplish red vs. purple red - slight variations in color will make a HUGE difference in price. (ie. how much of secondary color purple does it have?) and I don't remember seeing anthing about transparency (ie. is is trans., semi-trans, translucent, semi-translucent, opaque) Some of the other stones on the site look almost to be semi-translucent to opaque because of inclusions. ..which would also lower the value.

I really wanted to go look at the link to the cert again.. either the link isn't working or its my computer.

For me, it would have to be just very slightly purplish red, and transparent to semi-transparent, maybe translucent, to take the chance.  Worst case, if you get it and don't like it, or it appraises for less, 2.9 percent isn't too horrible.

With such a lousy return policy and expensive ring, I suggest requesting more pictures from the vendor if you are still interested in the ring.  Side views, underside of the ring and stone, top down view, etc will be needed for further assessment of the quality fo the ruby and setting.  Personally, I'd probably look for the ruby separately, then set it.  This way I have better control of the quality that I am getting.

Am I wrong or did it say 3.5 carats and under $10k? Heated but no filler? You really can't expect a red-red 3 carat ruby anywhere near that price.

Yes, it did say 3.58 carats.  AGTA certificate says heated, but nothing about filler.  It's described as "red" and "transparent."  Nothing about origin.

I wonder why AGTA bothers to give a description like "red" without further details.  That's not very useful, is it?

Re getting a stone and having a ring made.  It takes me forever to get things done, and I don't want to wait for myself!  Seriously, I've wanted an antique setting. This is a stone from another ring placed in an old setting.  Also, I have a 2 carat pink spinel that I want to reset with a couple small diamond I already have.  Maybe you could help me with that!

BTW, I've been hooked on this forum for a while and have learned a lot - thank you.
