Ok so I have a dilemma

I ordered a setting for my GF and we had gone to a jewellery store a few months back and she got sized as a 6. She then tells me today that she got a ring for Christmas from a friend that was a size 6 and it is "a little big for her liking".

SO now I'm thinking I am in trouble. Do you ladies usually have size fluctuations? I would be inclined to think maybe a 0.25 difference from summer to winter, with winter being a little smaller and summer maybe larger because of finger swelling from the heat? Maybe I am crazy.

Anyways either I stick with the 6 and hope its just slightly loose in the winter but perfect in the summer, or risk have the jeweller call up Tacori and see if they can drop it to a 5.75 before it gets shipped out. THEN I run the risk of it being a little too tight. Although I suppose a litte too tight is better than a little loose? What would be better if i had to choose?

Just when I thought I had everything figured out......

My ring size definitely fluctuates. I'm a 5.75 normally, my engagement ring is a size 6, and it is HUGE on me when I'm cold. I wouldn't change anything right now, I could be wrong but I believe that size can vary a bit between different designers anyway. I'd much rather have a ring be a bit too big than too small to even put on.

Good luck!

I definitely agree with the above statement.

In the mornings, I have troubles getting my ring off. And by the end of the day, it's too big. So having a different ring size than she originally thought may be due to many different things..

Ring fit can vary depending on things like temperature, weight fluctuation, pregnancy, and age.  The size of the shank also affects the way a ring fits.  My original ring was much chunkier (very 80's!) than my 20th Anniversary upgrade and was a half size bigger.  Keep in mind that a ring will fit differently when you have a wedding band with it.

Well said!

If the ring is too loose in winter, you could buy her a plain (or eternity) band in her smaller winter size so to be sure the e-ring will never fall off in colder months. [Not that this is likely, but it is nice to be sure.]

ETA: to be worn closest to her knuckle...

Thanks for the great info. I will keep it at a 6 for now.

As a side question, is it generally "better" or easier to make a ring smaller or larger? I would imagine easier to make it smaller, since you wouldnt have to add metal, but im not 100% sure. (PS. I know what is really better is to just get it to fit right in the first place haha)

Mike,

I think you were smart to keep the ring a size 6.

Ring sizing is a much trickier issue than we usually tend to think of.  In fact, sometimes it can be a real pain!  Normal finger size fluctuation, coupled with some size inconsistencies within the industry can be a real headache for sure.

To answer your question... hmmm, I dunno what's trickier, sizing up or down.  Good question, though.  At local B&Ms around here, it costs the same to have a ring sized up or down, so I would *assume* it's a (time/skill) comparable procedure?   Hopefully one of our experts will weigh in with a real answer, though.

(BTW, congrats on your upcoming engagement!)

And THAT'S my story and I'm sticking to it!

I had issues with figuring out my girlfriend's ring size.  She said 7.5 was perfect then she said 7 fit her nicely; I opted for a 7.25 to be safe.  I asked my jeweler if sizing up or down was easier and he told me sizing up was. That's my two cents.

I agree with you keeping it a size 6 for now.

My ring size changes, but by a lot more than a quarter size - I can wear between a 6.5 - 7.5 and tend to change wedding bands with seasons as the 6.5 is way too small in the summer and the 7.5 falling off my finger in the winter.

You could try this Temporary size adjustment insert to get an idea of what's best before making any changes.

4 more weeks till the setting arrives! then I have to think of how to do it hahah
