I am confused in trying to purchase a princess cut diamond. My home jeweler states the table % should be higher than the depth percentage %. Is this true? Are there optimal percentages for depth and table? Should the table be less than the depth? Any expertise provided will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for helping.

Scarecrow, Take a look at the The point is that table and depth alone cannot guarantee ideal cut. You should know crown and pavilion angles as well. Pricescope |

Leonid...Good suggestion, but he's talking about princesses... To judge a princess cut properly you should know talbe, depth, crown, pavilion, girdle and culet, as well as additional tests as BrillianceScope, Ideal Scope, light leakage images... _____________ |

Can I feel comfortable by relying solely upon the cut grading form from www.gemappraisers.com ?? I ask only because this tool doesn't reference pavilion angles. Thanks. Scoop |

Scoop, those charts will get you in the right ballpark. Then you can narrow it down considerably by viewing Idealscope photos of the contendors (or view them personally with an Idealscope). The poor performers will be immediately obvious. Some of the vendors include Idealscope photos in their descriptions of the stones. Scarecrow, your jeweler's got it reversed. The stones which have the same or greater depth % than table % are usually the better performers. Rich, Independent GG Appraiser |

Table % should NOT exceed Depth % in Princess Cuts for two reasons: 1. Crown height will be minimized; crown height is a critical component in maximizing light output. 2. Pavillion angle wil usually be in the low 50's% which results in light leakage. Giangi and Richard Sherwood are giving you very good advice. "Numbers" are good but peformance indicators such as light leakage images, BrillianceScopes and digital photo's are better and will give you valuable information. Barry www.superbcert.com
